The forum is a testing forum for another community so please pardon that I did not provide any link. I want to replace "notif thing" with, say, "You have x new notification!" every time I get a notification, or add "(1)" next to it. I can't seem to do so by copypasting the default if/else statement that uses $[navigation.menu.notification.total]. If anyone would point me at the right direction, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

$[navigation.menu.notification.total] only works inside of the foreach loop for the navigation menu itself.
If you look in the Loops and Variables list of the right sidebar and expand current_user you'll see one called new_notifications. That one can be used anywhere as current_user exists in all templates.
The full variable is $[current_user.new_notifications].
