Anyone have anything uncommon in the US like a bird or reptile or something else? Almost everyone I know has a dog or cat and I'm wondering why we aren't more diverse with our pets.

I have had all kinds of pets over the years. I used to raise and breed snakes (Ball pythons and Corns), but I've also had crested geckos, leopard geckos, rats, a few guinea pigs, a hedgehog, society finches, jumping spiders, and a preying mantis. Right now, though, all I have are two dogs.

My neighbor did tell me about how residents had a baby aligator in their bathtub.

Chickens. I don’t live in a rural area or have a farm or anything. Just chickens in my back garden.
I have a friend who has all sorts of interesting stuff. A skunk, massive lizards, giant snails, a mini crocodile...and loads of stuff he just has for a short while before finding them better homes. Spiders, frogs, a cayman once, various small mammals.

Almost everyone I know has a dog or cat and I'm wondering why we aren't more diverse with our pets. You can pet a cat (well, some cats) but a fish ... not-so-much. You can hug a boa but that probably won't end well. You might be able to teach a turtle to fetch your slippers but you'll be waiting a good long time for them. Rumor has it, bigballofyarn has cold feet.

Me too. I love macaws, cockatoos and eclectus parrots.

The only thing in this category I can think of is that I once had a pet fish when I was a child.
