Keep your chin up Marian, all of us here in ProBoards that know you will back you up to the hilt, just be strong and carry on with life.
I have COPD & Asthma so really I don't have to wear a mask but I do but I make sure my nostrils are free but my mouth is covered, I do this out of respect if I suddenly cough then I know I will cough into the mask, as I said, be strong and carry on with life and DO NOT be stressed out.

I'm so sorry that you had to do this, but your peace of mind, mental health, and self is more important than an income.

As a manager in a retail store (Goodwill) and having to enforce mask rules as well, I can somewhat relate. I say somewhat because I know there's a huge difference between hospitals and retail. It has been hard and I don't blame you for taking yourself out of a stressful environment. You do what is best for you, not what others think. You owe no explanation. It's your decision, not theirs.

People are ridiculous when it comes to masks. I went to the mall on Friday and found a man-child throwing the most predictable of fits. While in FYE/Sun Coast, a man comes in without a mask and is told he won't be served unless he wears one, which he doesn't have. Of course he tries to use some smarmy, capitalist logic to retort: "Even if I'm going to spend money? You're going to lose a lot of money!" As if the guy working in the store actually cares about that. The man is told he still isn't allowed to shop. Being of boomer age in Ohio, he falls back on the ultimate tantrum argument: "I'm a veteran! I fought for freedom for this country! This isn't freedom!" He shouted that as he stormed out, pointing at the man of similar age working in the shop.
Working for Walmart Digital, I've seen how the customer hosts are treated when they try to enforce mask usage--and by "enforce," I mean "mention the lukewarm policy to customers," because that's all they're permitted to do. Most people either oblige or ignore the employees completely, but there's a minority that flips out and acts like it's the end of the world. The older women working that role are stone cold the way they laugh it off. I'm seriously impressed by some of them.
I couldn't imagine screaming at a hospital employee over the mask requirement. No matter what a person's views on masks are, a hospital is the one place it makes absolute sense.
I may not understand crying before/after work or taking the hostility personally, but I agree that quitting was the best course of action if you're unable to handle it. I've felt it lately myself. Between the stresses of COVID and the holiday season, customers have been whiney, entitled little brats. Delivery drivers are even worse; I got into a screaming match with one over her impatience and hostile attitude the other day and honestly thought one of us was about to catch hands. I've set a deadline of February for when I set off for greener pastures again, but I don't know if I'll last that long.
