Understanding Board Permissions
► Board Permissions can be customized by going to Admin > Structure > Categories & Boards
Permissions are set by selecting a board and clicking the Edit Properties button. Multiple boards can be edited at the same time by pressing the keyboard's control key (ctrl) and simultaneously clicking on the desired boards, and then the Edit Properties button. For a Mac, use the command key, instead of control.
Categories can be edited the same way, however you cannot multi-select and edit both a board and category at the same time.
Board permissions allow you to define how users, both members and guests, interact with the content on your forum. The permissions set for a board are specific to that board.
Permission: Type
There are 5 different permission types that can be customized. In some cases a permission setting may affect another permission type.
View
Defines who can see that the board exists. The board is listed under its category along with any other boards.
Access
Defines who can see the content (threads and posts) of the board, regardless of the View permission.
Create Threads
Defines who can create new threads on the board.
Reply to Threads
Defines who can reply to existing threads (make new posts in threads) on the board.
Create Polls
Defines who can create polls (i.e. a thread with a poll) on the board.
Permission: Who
The following "who" permissions are standard and you will find they function the same whether it is for themes, plugins, or custom pages, as well as for categories and boards. The main admin is not affected by the permissions.
Everyone
This includes all users both members and guests. This is the default setting.
Members & Staff
Only registered members of the forum. No guests.
Staff
Only registered members that belong to a staff designated member group.
Custom
With no other option defined, the permission type only affects the main admin, no other user.
Categories
Categories only have one permission: Access. The permission set for a category will override the permissions of any board under that category that has less restrictive permissions.
Similar to the View permission, categories have a Hidden option. If enabled, the category and its boards will be hidden from all users (including the main admin), however they will still be accessible based on the permissions. A user would only be able to access the hidden content from a link or by knowing the exact URL.

View
Defines who can see that the board exists. The board is listed under its category along with any other boards.
Viewing the content of the board is determined by the Access permission.
Access
Defines who can see the content (threads and posts) of the board, regardless of the View permission.
It is possible to have the board's content accessible to a greater audience even if the View permission is more restricted. For example: If the board's View permission is restricted to staff, but the Access permission is set to Everyone, then while only staff will see the board listed on the forum, anyone with the board's URL will be able to see the board's content. Generally View and Access are set to the same 'who' permission.
Create Threads
Defines who can create new threads on the board.
Reply to Threads
Defines who can reply to existing threads (make new posts in threads) on the board.
Create Polls
Defines who can create polls (i.e. a thread with a poll) on the board.
The Create Threads permission will always take precedence over this permission. For example: If Create Threads is set to staff only, then even if Create Polls is set to Members & Staff, members would not be able to create a poll, only users who are staff.

Has the option of excluding designated member groups.
Members & Staff
Only registered members of the forum. No guests.
Has the option of excluding designated member groups.
Staff
Only registered members that belong to a staff designated member group.
Has the option of both including and/or excluding designated member groups. Member groups added through this option do not need to be designated as staff.
Custom
With no other option defined, the permission type only affects the main admin, no other user.
Has the option of both including and/or excluding designated member groups.
Has the added option of selecting a minimum rank as a requirement.
Has the added option of selecting a minimum rank as a requirement.
Note: If a member belongs to more than one member group and those groups are used in the same permission type, the group used in a more restrictive permission will take precedence.
For example: Member belongs to both groups A and B. If the A group is excluded from creating threads, but the B group is allowed to create threads, the member would not be able to create threads as the more restrictive permission (excluding the A member group from creating threads) would take precedence.
For example: Member belongs to both groups A and B. If the A group is excluded from creating threads, but the B group is allowed to create threads, the member would not be able to create threads as the more restrictive permission (excluding the A member group from creating threads) would take precedence.
Categories
Categories only have one permission: Access. The permission set for a category will override the permissions of any board under that category that has less restrictive permissions.
The category's Access permission also incorporates the View permission. This means whatever 'who' permission is set affects the users ability to both see and access the category and its boards. For example: if a category Access permission is set to staff, then only staff will be able to view and access the category and its boards. The category and its boards will not be visible or accessible for non-staff members, regardless of the 'who' permissions defined for the boards in that category.
Similar to the View permission, categories have a Hidden option. If enabled, the category and its boards will be hidden from all users (including the main admin), however they will still be accessible based on the permissions. A user would only be able to access the hidden content from a link or by knowing the exact URL.
