A lot of people pack rat over depression and mental misbehaviors will admit I've bought some dumb things I don't really need mostly electronic based. Theirs nothing wrong with treating yourself here and there but how do you convince yourself that you don't really want something or need it? I'm guilty of impulse buys lately especially walking around stores like Walmart might see something for $5 or $10 grab it not really thinking or caring about it until I realize it was a wasteful buy.

When I can't force my front door closed, that's usually a bad sign.

When I can't force my front door closed, that's usually a bad sign. LOL I don't buy on impulse, and I definitely won't buy something just because it's on sale. The only things I might buy on impulse are from the sweets and biscuit section in the supermarket, and that weren't on my shopping list.

I almost never buy on impulse unless it's something small like a pack of gum. If I buy anything in a down mood, it's usually a book, a DVD, or a CD. And they are usually on sale.

how do you convince yourself that you don't really want something or need it? ....when you've run out of cupboards/closets!

When the fridge freezer drawers are full and you can't put any more in, then if the wife says "We had better start eating some stuff off before the run out date..." that's when there will be no basic shopping for around a week until the contents in the fridge/freezer drawers and shelves are nearly bare.
Clothes wise, is if you try an item of clothing on you have had for a while and then find out they are too big or too small in fitting you, then, it's either black bag clothes donation time to the local charity shop then out shopping for new items.

When I can't force my front door closed, that's usually a bad sign. Well, I’ve probably had a shopping day like that once or twice. Probably when I saw collections of stuff cheaper than it normally is. 😉

I always put things in my Wish List on Amazon instead of in my cart. Then I’ll go back a couple of days later and see if it was simply an impulse.

I have a hard time treating myself sometimes, unless its food-based. What I do for non-food based items that I really want is I make myself wait a period of time - sometimes a month or more - then if I still want it, can afford it, and don't mind spending what they're asking for it I'll buy it. That way I remove myself from the "impulse" of wanting to get it just because I saw it then and there.
For food, I limit myself to a specific day or two in the week for the extra "treat" item (like fast food, a donut, etc). I buy the ingredients for the drinks I might buy while I'm out and about and prepare them at home, and stock my home with healthier treats (whole fruits for something sweet, a container of nuts I can eat a handful of for salty, etc).

Used to live with a girl on a narrowboat who wasn't safe in a Staples store (the office stationary shop). We moored near one for 2 years, drawers and cupboards full of Post-it notes and pens. "Why do we need another laminator? They don't work on 12 volts". We moved away.
Thankfully we split up before they built a new Office/PC world near my new moorings.
I'm very much not an impulse buyer. I "write" a mental list and buy that. Except on Christmas Eve when everything goes to pot.
