Good grief. It's 2022WHY do people still PANIC when snow is predicted and wipe the store shelves clean of bread & milk?(Bar this year having usual supply chain issues) Because THIS has been going on for EVER. Are people living that close to the edge if they are stuck in their homes for 3 days they will wither away from starvation or risk the children coming down with skurvy when the milk/bread runs out We are strange creatures indeed....

I always thought it was hilarious when a blizzard is predicted and people hurry out to buy water.

I mean I kind of get it you never know how bad it could turn out, a burst of wind would cause a tree Limb to fall and smash your car, you could be without power and water for days things can just get hectect and you never know.
We once had a ice storm predicted to not be that bad and a huge tree limb fell on our house messing up the roof.

Milk and bread freeze quite well so the panic buying is a bit bonkers.
I personally don't use milk often and keep a few kilograms of flour in the larder just in case.
But I know what you mean. A bit of a bad weather forecast and fresh vegetables disappear from my local shops.

It was rather annoying when I could only get 1/4 of my regular grocery trip and had to wait in line 4 times as long because people panic buying. I simply do not understand the mentality behind all of this. There was literally no milk at my local grocery store. Not a drop, despite an expensive dairy section. Same with eggs and bread.

I think you forgot that everyone panic buys eggs too My theory is that as soon as the word's 'heavy snow' are uttered, everyone in the storm path gets a horrible urge for bread pudding!. *insert evil grin here*

I totally agree if you have nothing in the house - absolutely get staples!(I'm on an EDS team (Emergency Disaster Services) so I can talk about 'planning' ahead all day long ) I also worked for a grocery store for 10 yrs. So I can also tell you - it's a weird MILK & BREAD thing.(Obviously carried over from the 'old' days when getting to the stores during a storm WAS impossible) Old habits just die hard I guess.

As long as I can have my power, internet, and food for at least 5 days. I'm good. I don't panic buy. These past few years have been ridiculous in that department though. lol.

Are people living that close to the edge if they are stuck in their homes for 3 days they will wither away from starvation or risk the children coming down with skurvy when the milk/bread runs out We are strange creatures indeed.... Well, for some maybe they panic buy because they don't go out much to begin with and they want to make sure they have things to eat at home if there is a blizzard or whatever. My mom doesn't drive and we lived about 30 minutes outside of the city, so when we heard there was a blizzard she would try and get plenty of food to last us at least a week. We had a blizzard (back when I was a kid about 9 or 10) so bad we were stuck in our house for days. The snow was so deep it was half way up our front door. We don't get a whole lot these days, even though neither one of us drives, but we do make sure we have the basic things to hold us over since getting a ride is hard when there is any snow or ice.

My thread wasn't about overall 'panic buying'. That happens. I was speaking directly of the panic buy of MILK & BREAD. Always the milk/bread shelves wiped bare. There was/is (except during the supply-chain crises) plenty of soups, mac & cheese, etc of overall other foods avbl on the shelves when the stores wrap up for the night. Now one could argue that those foods would/might need heated up to consume and if power is lost... (technically, when hungry- soup is pretty darn good cold too) So you get milk. What are you going to do with it??? Where's the cereal? Cookies? Bread - sure PB&J's. Does everyone have stockpiles of PB & J? and Cereal? And Cookies?? Why not empty those shelves as well. Yes, Milk & bread are perishables. Yes, you can freeze them both (but I'm guessing most don't or there would be more readily avbl quantities during this time) Yes, these are items that are 'finite items' delivered almost daily to the grocers by 3rd party vendors (I understand this, I put the stuff away into the coolers & shelves for 10+ yrs) But in the big scheme of things - so are all the other items on the grocers shelves (and not every grocery has stockpiles & stockpiles in the back rooms to keep all these other shelves overflowing with every good when hoards come thru the doors)- but yet, they sit on the shelves. Hardly a dent.
It's just the MILK & BREAD panic that I find fascinating~

Yeah I was on night stock for a good five years and coming in during a winter storm was awful 8000 piece trucks with 12 people on shift shelves empty galore.

You never want to be stuck at your house for a while without the basic staple grocery items, whether that's milk, bread, eggs, etc. It's silly to panic buy, but I'd much rather be overcautious then not be cautious enough. I went grocery shopping yesterday too.

French ToastIn a small bowl, combine cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar and set aside briefly. In a 10-inch or 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk together cinnamon mixture, eggs, milk, and vanilla and pour into a shallow container such as a pie plate. Dip bread in egg mixture. Fry slices until golden brown, then flip to cook the other side. Serve with syrup. Link

You and I must be the only two who are in the mood for it. This year I tried making it with a bread from Pepperedge Farm pumpkin spice bread- drool. www.pepperidgefarm.com/product/pumpkin-spice-swirl-bread-limited-edition/I don't understand why so many turn their noses up at bread pudding, but love french toast.
