"There is a common denominator we can find. There is a place where we can achieve agreement." – Senator MurphyPlease, if your senator or representative do not act to make our schools, our nation safer - vote them out of office. Members of congress are elected to serve the people. It's time they do their job. RIP to all the Uvalde souls not going home today.

As tragic as it is theirs honestly so little politicians can do to make schools safer when any idiot can get his hands on weapons so easily which is generally acquired illegally. Sure they can add more police to schools but do we honestly want schools looking like police stations for children to go through.

It's absolutely tragic.
But our tax dollars are supposed to go to schools to make them safer, getting them up to date. Etc.
Where does all these tax dollars go? It's supposed to go to roads too. But they fix the same road every year, and nothing else that really really needs it.
Doesn't matter the political side. Both sides are at fault, and don't properly represent the citizens.

We won't solve this over night, but there are things we can start doing. For instance, pass HR8 the bill regarding background checks.

We won't solve this over night, but there are things we can start doing. For instance, pass HR8 the bill regarding background checks. I absolutely agree on background checks, but there also needs to be accountability and common sense checks, too. I remember all to well the number of shootings caused by those not old enough to own a gun that either had easy access to their parents guns, or in the case of the shooter in Michigan not too long ago whose moron parents actually bought their minor sun a gun for Christmas. A friend of mine is going through the process to be able to adopt a child, and I think the same type of rigorous process needs to be applied for gun ownership. A housing inspection that verifies that the potential owner not only has a safe place to store said weapon, but also educates all present in the home how to store it. A licensing stage to prove that the potential owner knows how to operate the weapon. A background check and a psych evaluation, including those residing in the home.
If we make people jump through so many hoops and hurtles to house children, there should be equal number of hoops and hurtles to buy a gun.
The second amendment includes the words 'well regulated'. I think it's beyond time for that regulation to begin.

The issue is theirs probably more guns then citizens no matter what laws we have if someone is mental enough they'll get their hands on a weapon and cause a massacre so I honestly can't see what a politician can do to abolish total violence against humanity.

User 180565 is taking donation , it's not about "what a politician can do to abolish total violence against humanity" - it's about what a politician can do to reduce gun violence. This is something that is realistic and achievable.

This is something that is realistic and achievable. The problem is, Chicago is full of gun violence. Whats done about it? Nothing. It's more illegal guns than registered guns. I've seen problems de-escalate because legal citizens had shown their gun to the perp, and things declined really quickly. Legal gun owners shouldn't be punished for the ones that don't care about the law.

Darkmage4 - I never said anything about punishing legal gun owners. This isn't a gun debate or a political party issue. The point Senator Murphy made was that we can and need to put our differences aside to work together to mitigate, if not stop, these mass shootings. The fact that we lead the world in mass shootings and school shootings should make everyone pause ask What are we doing?

This is something that is realistic and achievable. We're ignoring the fact that there's so many guns vs population it's alot easier for criminals to get ahold of unmarked weapons that the government can't control all that well. Gangs are alot smarter than we credit them for.

I probably should've clarified that.

Man, the "there's so many illegal guns" argument is hogwash. Look at so many recent violent events. These are middle class and up disaffected youth. They got their guns legally or had their parents get them.. Yeah there are a lot of illegal guns. But, *maybe* just maybe start with simple and common sense things to limit mentally unbalanced persons, or their irresponsible parents, from buying guns at the neighborhood gun shop.
Stop putting your head in the ground and look at reality. Stop bending reality to your worldview and look at it with fresh eyes to see what can be improved. There's the old adage "perfect is the enemy of the good." Just because an idea isn't or can't be perfect doesn't mean we shouldn't try to have progress.

We've been having school shootings since the 1700s if the government could do something about it I'm sure they would have by now. www.k12academics.com/school-shootings/history-school-shootings-united-statesThe most we can do is take kids and adults mental health more serious maybe the general population should wake their eyes up and realize the government can't protect you from everything and actually hire more therapists for students and group them together so they don't feel overwhelmed as theirs an average of 2,000 students in public schools. Come on if you actually think people can't get their hands on weapons regardless of laws in place.

It's gotten worse since the internet. Kids will still get bullied, and the kid will get angry enough to bring dads/moms gun. Most the time, especially this kid in Texas. They already knew about him before hand.
