Smilie Background Colour

Is it possible to change the background colour for the smiles on certain themes?  Specifically the background colour of the smilie drop down box.

It is generally a single style sheet rule that defines the background color not only for the smiley menu but also governs these other menus:

• Embed menu (class: embed-menu)

  
  
  

• Options menu (class: options_menu)

  
  
  

• Actions menu (class: select_menu_list)

  
  
  

• context menu (class: ui-menu-context)

  
  
  

Below is the rule from a typical theme (but your theme may have replaced it, which is why it is best to answer that question on a per theme basis)

.embed-menu,.embed-menu ul,.options_menu,.options_menu ul,.select_menu_list,.select_menu_list ul,.smiley-menu,.smiley-menu ul,.ui-menu-context,.ui-menu-context ul {
   padding: 2px;
   border: 1px solid #aaa;
   background-color: #eee;
   box-shadow: 0 2px 4px #444
}


If that is the CSS rule that governs the background color for the theme where you wish to change just the smiley menu (and nothing else) then add the following to the bottom of the theme's style sheet

.smiley-menu, .smiley-menu ul {
   background-color: red;
}

If you have a theme that deviates from using that typical rule, then you would need to supply access to that theme so it can be determined what rules it is using.

The reason I ask about changing the colour  and  I should have specified the smilie drop down menu box is that the one theme requires white text. The admin has provided titled categories for her smilies, but of course on the white background the white text doesn't show. I know you can change the background in the settings but that is for all the themes. I just want the background for the smilie background a different colour for that specific theme.

You misunderstand me, spicealicious . The answer I gave above shows you how to change the smiley background on a typical theme because there was no identifying information supplied regarding a specific theme. Each theme has independent settings that would not affect other themes.

The answer can only be as specific as the question. The more info and access you give when couching the question, the more detailed and accurate the answer would be.

   If you provide a forum link with the theme set to default so a guest can inspect the theme in question, that would be ideal and get you a detailed high-confidence answer within 30 seconds after someone viewed it 👍.
   
   

   • If you don't want to set the theme in question as the default theme for diagnostic purposes, then someone would need to join the forum in order to set the theme in their profile or work with forum staff to gain access to a restricted theme to finally get the chance to inspect the CSS rules contained within that specific theme.

   If you don't want to provide a forum link but can supply the name of the theme then some motivated person might

   1. go searching for that theme in the library
   2. *create a forum on which to install that theme
   3. install the theme
   4. finally inspect the theme to see what rules govern the theme
   5. formulate an answer after inspecting the theme

change red to whatever color suits you

Yup, read and understood that part and that part is ok. It is
The part with the red dot in it that needs to be a different colour. She has category titles for her smilies and with a white font it won't show on the light background for that.

That is a dialog created by a plugin not Proboards. You'll want to post in the support thread for that smiley plugin since the author of that plugin (Todge ) would be much more familiar with changing stuff on that #smilieDiv. It could very well be a setting in the plugin itself rather than having to deal with CSS rules but the author would know that better than I do since I have never tried that plugin.

It does indeed look to be a setting in the plugin, you should open the plugin in your admin panel and look for that option to change the background color

While that indeed did change the background colour for that theme, it changes the background colour  across the board for all the themes which is not what I was wanting. Thank you for your help, and your suggestion about posting in the plugin section,

Interesting...so you're saying you made a change to the stylesheet of a particular theme, but when you switched to a different theme, those changes had propagated to another theme? (That's not supposed to be possible)

The plugin hardcodes the background color (not theme-specific) so changing it via the plugin would indeed standardize that color across all themes. The smilieDiv CSS I offered in my last post, on the other hand, would activate and change the background only on the theme(s) to which it has been added. That is generally how themes work.

Chris Phyffer. I did as instructed and changed the colour of the background in the Smilie Backgrounds and Colours of the Plugin. As you can see by these two screenshots using two different themes the colour is the same for both themes.

spicee , a quick look on the test forum shows the background color was changed from within the plugin, which would set that color across all themes

The other option offered was to add the color change to the stylesheet of the theme. I incorrectly assumed that was the path you took:
