You're going to have to elaborate here if you're making a plugin request — at minimum, you'll need to describe the expected user experience / outcome of using these tags.

There are separate plugins available to accomplish each requested notation format

   If you click the Live Preview link you will see that it does support FEN when it is embedded within the PGN as a start position, so technically, it does also support FEN it just has to be wrapped within the PGN format. Select game 2 or 3 in the game selector to see FEN being used within PGN to setup a non-standard start position for a game

Thanks...I tried to install this one:

to check it out, but when I use the "Install Plugin" button it brings me to the login/register page for my board, then after I clicked login it just drops me into my forum with no install.

The desired behavior:

Chess games and positions are encoded in to two main formats. PGN format is basically like XML that contains an entire game (or even a library of games), notes and annotations, etc.

FEN notation is simple string that translates to a single chess position.
Example:  rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1

I would like to ideally be able to tell forum members that they can copy a FEN string, paste it between bbcode tags, preferably [fen] and [/fen], and have that display graphically as a chessboard position in the post.

If I can get FEN to work, which is simpler, I will move on to PGN.

You would need to be already logged into your forum or go back to the plugin download page after making sure you are logged in and refresh making sure it shows you as logged in at the top right and also knows which forum you are currently administering. You should also see a option to install directly to the forum and clicking that will take you to a page on your forum where you can configure the plugin that was just installed.

The recommended procedure to avoid errors when installing directly from the online library is entailed below

If an item is available on the Library it is easier to install it from there; it avoids having to download and then import the file into your forum.

To install a plugin from the Library:

I am trying . Not sure what is wrong. I check that I am logged in as Admin and I am on the main page of the board, I go to the Admin -> PlugIns -> PlugIns Library page and search for the plugin (there's no purple box), I click Install (not Download), and it immediately takes me to the Login/Register page. When I click Login, it goes directly to my forum without any actual login (I assume because it does recognize I am already logged in). Then I check the plugins management page, nothing listing. It never tells me it fails, it just doesn't do anything.

Most of the behind-the-scenes magic happens via cookies, but visiting the library from your forum's admin panel adds the unique numerical identifier associated with your forum (you can see this identifier when you log in or register on your forum as well) so the library knows exactly on which forum you intend to install a plugin.

The images are 10 years old, so a more accurate depiction would be

1. Select the Plugins menu then the Plugin Library menu-item
   
   and that will take you to the library with the information of where you are coming from embedded in the URL
   _{note:direct links to plugins within the library, such as the one that is posted above, do not have your forum ID embedded, so the library might be confused especially if you belong to several forums (such as this support forum and your own)}
   
   
2. Once you get to the library make sure it recognizes you as logged in (cookies) and the site knows which forum you are hailing from.
   
   
   
   
   
   

If still no joy then retry everything in incognito mode (to rule out cookie chicanery): log into your forum in your browser's privacy/incognito mode > go to admin panel > head over to the library via the link/menu in your admin panel > find the plugin > click the install on forum button.

If that also fails, then you will need to do it the manual way by downloading to your device then go into your admin panel and upload the file you downloaded ( click on the date next to the  icon in the recommended procedure I posted above and that will take you to the full post from where that quote was taken which also includes the download instructions)
