What's a good tip to stop looking at the huge forums and wondering why I can't get a good forum going!

The post counts of members and the total post counts on forums don't necessarily define success. It's the quality of the posts and not the quantity of the posts that matters the most. Yes, I do look at and enjoy statistics. However, a forum having more or less posts than mine doesn't make them better or worse than mine. A good thing to learn when running a forum is that it's not a competition. Everyone wants something different in a forum. Some people want to join big and established communities. Other people want to join forums that are just starting out and only have a handful of members. If you already created your new forum and want to receive feedback, you can visit the Get Opinions About Your Forum section of ProBoards Support. If you need help with anything else, let us know.

quality > quantity
also like. you'll never have someone else's forum. you only have yours. if you spend your time trying to replicate someone else's success, you'll never discover what will be your own.

I also want to chime in and say it takes time for a community to build. I recommend spreading the word about your forum in as many places as you can. There's lots of promotional forums that are off of Proboards and even some hosted on Proboards. These places may even have a place to do post exchanges which can also help bring in more posts.

For my forum, I have maintained a speadsheet that provides me with Page View per Post (PgV/Post) since the forum inception. I am happy so long as PgV/Post is going up or is steady. I include it in my monthly forum summary in the Forum Analytics thread. BTW, my forum is sort of a wiki for personal finance and there aren't lots of posts, but I monitor if people are reading that stuff. ybbpersonalfinance.proboards.com/thread/222/forum-analytics?page=3&scrollTo=1455

But who joins a forum just for promotion? There's lots of people that join promotional forums. But they're not just for promoting but most of them also offer services like posting services, reviews, etc. There's also webmaster related topics posted on most promotional forums too.
