Question: I wander if it's not a feature now, if it could be a feature in the future that people could simply join a proboard with say their Facebook account (or Google account) or otherwise. It would seem like it would make it easier for users to join boards.

I wouldn't think this is a good idea and it might even go against the ProBoards ToS. People enter all kinds of fake information when then create Facebook accounts. When a user joins a ProBoards forum, they need to enter their correct birthday and agree to the ProBoards ToS. Logging in with Facebook would bypass both of those.

I do just want to add that PB has already tried this in the past, with Facebook, Google, and I wanna say Twitter, back in the early 2010s. It stuck around for a few years, but ultimately was discontinued as it did not achieve whatever goals PB had intended for that feature.
