Hi! We are experiencing a strange problem. When some members post smileys from the theme's stash, some others only see the characters related to them. This seems to be a problem unrelated to which browser is being used and other factors that we have tried to trouble-shoot. It's very annoying to those affected, so we hope that someome can solve this riddle for us. Thanks in advance! Regards Tix Mascot heretix.boards.net

Problem eventually solved by yours truly by some trying and failing (and luck). I discovered that smileys added to the stash in one theme only show up as text in other themes, which is a bit awkward IMO, since once an admin has chosen 100 additional smileys and inserted their URLs in one theme, they have to do the operation all over again each time they change themes. And with this theme-specific smiley arrangement, you only see the smileys posted in the same theme that you are currently using. A friendly suggestion: Make the additional smileys forum-specific rather than theme-specific!

Just out of curiosity, are these additional smileys added to a theme's images ( Admin > Themes > Theme Manager > (mouse over theme) > Images) or via plugin? If added to the theme's images (not via plugin), then they are going to be theme-specific, just like additions to the stylesheet for that theme as well as all of the other theme settings.

Lynx, the smileys in question are added via the theme's images. None of us (Heretix users) realised this until the idea suddenly dawned on me earlier today and I checked it out. I may have to find out more about this plugin, though, since it could be useful for us if it overbuilds all the themes. Thanks for the info! Tix Mascot

Tix Mascot I don't believe the plugin overbuilds the smileys in the theme manager, but rather adds to what's already there. Todge would know more, since the Smiley plugins I'm thinking of are his creations.

Hi Tix Mascot, Lynx is correct, my smiley plugins only add smileys, it should not effect any smileys added via the admin panel, besides, I see that you only have the Personal Smileys plugin. I can't explain the issues you are having, but I would have thought that if it is only effecting the theme smileys, I would have thought it was an issue with the theme coding.. I have never played around with themes, so am unsure if I can help you.

Todge, thanks for your input! Like you, I have never been concerned about the themes thing. With a little help from other Heretix members, I have developed the original theme for almost ten years and that has been it until last month, when we got a new global modertor, whose specialty is creating themes. She has produced many amazing creations and since our members have different preferences, they started to use the various themes that they like. And then the problem began, since the smileys that are in the old Heretix theme are different from the ones I inserted in the new default Denim Indigo theme. If I understand it correctly, then what we see in one theme when someone posts smileys in another theme is the code and not the images/gifs themselves. Last night, I installed two new smiley plugins and I'll have a closer look into them in due course, but the way I think this needs to play out is to only use the plugins for the smiley URLs and delete those in the two themes, to make sure that evrybody sees the same, regardless of which theme they are using.

Yes, if you use a plugin to add smileys, unless that plugin is specifically designed to show different smileys across different themes, you will get the same images globally.
I wasn't aware that you could have different smileys for different themes, but, as you can I can imagine that you have to have the same amount of smileys using the same codes across all themes, otherwise it makes sense that if a smiley is missing in any of the themes, it would be displayed as a code instead.

OK, so I inserted 79 smileys into your plugin and it all seems to work fine, except for one thing: In the Shoutbox, a double colon appears before and after the image, like this: :: ::, which is a bit annoying. If you can get rid of this hickup, I'll give you 5 stars on the plugin's rating.

Does this happen with all smileys? And with all members on all themes? And may I try posting a smiley to your chat box on your forum?

I don't know if it happens for others, since I just posted the info and nobody has replied yet.
When I tried to use my Tester profile, the same things happened for the smileys I posted in the Shoutbox while in the Denim Indigo theme. But when I switched to the Heretix theme, the double colons were gone (see the shouts by Tix Mascot and Tester!). It seems as though all smileys are affected, although I have only tried a few.
You can see if you can detect an anomaly somewhere by posting shouts. I'll open access to new mambers again in case you'd like to try various themes.

If this is theme specific it is 100% something to do with that theme, either censored words, which you have ruled out, or part of the coding that is adding the extra colons. I will do some digging, but I may need to add your theme to my test site to have a real chance of finding the issue.
