I've been trying for years to "set" a template for my forum. Meaning, I create a theme that works as I intend, save it, then as the seasons change I can change the themes. However, I find that things change. In particular, the headers and the size (especially the height) of the Nav bar and the Newsfeed. The space between the bar below the header (NOT sure what THAT one is called) and the Newsfeed is almost always too high, and I'm not sure how to change that. So, is there a "set" template that I can save, then use to change the colors, backgrounds, etc., but have it stay the same sizes, etc.? I don't understand why, when I save a theme, but change the colors, background, etc., the sizes change, even when I keep the sizes the same as what is in the template previously. I'm not all that CSS knowledgeable, but I do understand some of it. I think it would be nice if one could click on the preview, and have that part highlighted in the Visual Editor so I know I'm changing the right thing. Is that possible?

The space below the nav bar and the header should be displaying an ad. If you don't see one, please be sure that proboards.com (and its other subdomains: freeforums.net and boards.net) have been whitelisted in your adblocker.
You cannot click on an element and have the live preview be highlighted. That would be a change required on PB's end (we cannot make any changes to the functionality of the admin panel, for security reasons — in the past changes used to affect the admin panel as well, which would often lock people out of their admin panel if they made a mistake in editing their coding / theme). Unfortunately, PB has suspended new feature development indefinitely so what you see is what you get in this case.
As far as anything else, it's hard to diagnose a broad swathe of problems without seeing the theme(s) in action. From what you're describing, it sounds like user error when initially creating the base theme — I frequently duplicate themes to use as a base for my next one, and don't encounter these issues — but without knowing what changes were made to create the template + without seeing the results there is no way to tell for certain.
Could you do two things?
1. can you export your "template" them and your "copy" and attach them to your next post so we can see what changes were made?
2. can you describe ONE change you made, step by step, with your intended outcome and the actual outcome? And I do mean step by step and not a summary — even "obvious" steps like "go to admin panel".
PS the thing below the header that says home, etc is the nav bar. The thing by the newsfeed is the nav *tree*.

Thanks, Kami! Yes, I know I can't click on the CSS and have the Preview highlighted. I WISH I could. I learned most of my website creation on Dreamweaver, but it's been since '13 that I've used any, so I'm quite rusty on CSS, sorry. So, to answer your questions... Hmmm, to my knowledge, I HAVE whitelisted my adblocker. I'll have to check which of my security apps could be blocking that ad. I don't use the common browsers or search engines that most do. 1. Not sure what you mean by exporting my "template" theme, and my "copy". Am I able to put the .pbt files here? 2. I had a friend who is better at this than I give some help. So, we have fixed some things, and it is now working pretty much as I have intended. Guess I should go back an revisit CSS! I'm retired, and when I quit building websites, I decided I was going to actually QUIT. Maintaining my forum, though, means I should actually know what I'm doing! LOL Any way, thanks for your response! I DO appreciate it. I'm just impatient, so asked/bothered a friend...

You'll need to use the full reply not the quick reply, but there should be an attachment button. To understand why the "copy" theme is changing beyond the values you alter when you modify the duplicated "template" theme, I need to see them both. 2. If you intend on making many modifications to your forum's appearance then yes, I would recommend revisiting CSS. Much has changed even in the last handful of years, and the longer it's been since you stopped, the more there is to catch up on. For what it's worth, I never use the visual editor for my own themes, I always work in the style sheet directly (especially since I often change the HTML structure of the forum as a whole). and of course, I understand the impatience. Once upon a time, I was a graphic designer; but I got so impatient waiting for someone to come along to code my designs I ended up teaching myself 🤪

Thanks again, Kami. Since it's working now, I'll leave things as they are. And, when I get the time, I'll start back on CSS. I no longer have my college books, but I have used W3Schools in the past, and they are pretty good at teaching, even "old" people like me! LOL Thanks for your help! I may be back.
