After banning a member, what do you with that persons account? Do you put "Banned" in their custom title? do you delete the account? I was wondering, what does everyone do?

If someone with a blacklisted IP and/or email address tries to join and gets banned before I approve their account, then nothing happens. I deny the registration request and that's the end of it. It's been a very long time since I've banned a member. I used to set the bans to expire in the year 2222 to humor myself, and the accounts are sitting and rotting to this day. I don't change anything about their profiles. I don't see a reason in making it say "banned" in all their posts. If they can't post again, their old posts are insignificant. The only people who need to know about bans or have input on bans are my staff members, and we discuss that privately.

Since my forum has a warning system flow, if someone's banned that either means they were given several chances to improve and didn't, or they were so much the opposite of the type of member the forum should have (a spammer, someone who is just outright being terrible to other people, etc) that it's not worth having them on the forum. I don't want either of these types of people on the forum, so their accounts get deleted.

After banning a member, what do you with that persons account? Do you put "Banned" in their custom title? do you delete the account? I was wondering, what does everyone do? It depends on the type of ban. On rare occasions, a normally benign member might exhibit some unacceptable behavior. If it was deemed necessary to give them a few days "vacation" from the forum as a cooling off period, we'd just set an expiration date on the ban and initiate a PM for them to read if/when they logged on after the expiration. ( We've stopped using bans for this purpose. More on that later.) For the far more common ad-spammers, after banning, we move their thread(s) or post(s) to a special board visible only to staff and add the member to a group named: 🚫 There are two reasons why placing them in this group is useful. When another admin gets a notice that a new member has joined the forum and they check on this member, they immediately see they've been banned, so there is no need to check their posts. Also, it makes it quick and easy to get a tally of banned members by looking at the number of members in this group (currently 209). Also, we can get a sense of how many of these spammers eventually get banned system-wide by proboards, by sorting the member list of this group by name and seeing how many instances of "account-disabled" there are (currently 112). Not that we actually do anything with this information. It just feeds our curiosity. Some forum admins are highly irritated by spammers, but I'm not. They're just another indication your forum is being noticed by the public at-large. It's easy enough to clean up their mess and we have admins in Eastern and Pacific time zones in the US as well as one in Australia and another in the UK, so the trash is rarely in the public view for more than a few hours.
For members who need a slight "attitude adjustment" we no longer use temporary bans. Instead, we place them in a hidden group named: Shushed. Since it's a hidden group, this does not show on their profile and it's discrete. Other members are totally unaware. Members of this group can not create or reply to threads on any of our boards. We also disable their ability to initiate new PMs by editing their profile. We then send them a politely worded PM informing them their posting privileges have been temporarily suspended, and we explain why. If/when the dialog progresses to the point we determine they've properly modified their attitude, we'll restore their posting privileges (remove them from the group) and enable their ability to initiate new PMs. The inability to post can be a real attention-getter and since they aren't banned, a dialog with staff via PM is possible.

I should clarify that spam definitely does get deleted. I don't save those posts. I don't delete accounts unless their sole purpose and existence was to spam. If an account has thousands of posts, but hypothetically we come to the decision to ban a person, I don't see myself deleting the account. It really depends on what happened, what they said, why they were banned, how long they were banned for, and so forth.

For me it depends on the reason for the banning. For some I'll just put it in the banned group (I have one). But for others I'll delete the account and block the IP. It's a judgment call.

When an account is deleted, the username in all his/her posts becomes "deleted". So, "deleted" can be from multiple deleted accounts. It's also tricky to keep track of the former deleted members. These deletions are irreversible - if the person ever is allowed back, his/her old posts cannot be restored to his/her username. IMO, account deletion is the worst option.
Better to disable or ban or put them in a restricted group or hide them in a private group.
