Limit the file size of avatars

Hi, I've been looking for a code that will limit the file size of avatars. I've got a couple of members whose avatars take forever to load because they are huge files, even though they are displayed small on my board. Usually, I just ask them to change avatars, but I'd love to avoid the problem some how.

Is this for V5 or V4.5 forums? On V5 I think the file size is 1MB max and although I'm reading about it here, I'm afraid it is above my head for implementing. Looking at the V5 style sheet I see a line that might be where you could set it but again, above my head. If for V5 I'll need to move this to the appropriate board where someone else can help. This board is for the few who are still using v4.5.

there is not a crossbrowser way to probe for file size using javascript.

other methods require downloading the file first before checking its size.. which sort of defeats the purpose of checking it size before its downloaded.
