Okay, so I have this ANCIENT program called Paint Shop Pro 8, right? Well, I'm getting a website next month, so my fantastic mother bought me Photoshop CS-2. Everything is WAY different in there. I thought it was supposed to be higher grade? No offense or anything, but here's what I'm having problems with.
The training video was ALL about photo editing. Is that all it's for? If so, I just wasted a bunch of my mother's money on what I thought was a graphics program. I need shot.
The crop tool... In PSP8, you can type in what width and height you want to crop and just move the middle handle to where you want it. In PS, it doesn't have that option. You have to guess. Is there any way to change this?
I have a few more questions, but this should get me started. I'm super dumb and the training video didn't really help me, so thanks SO much for dealing with my stupidity!

Okay some tips. Photoshop is not just for photoediting though when first made that was who it was aimed at. i suggest bertmonroy.com he made his paintings with photoshop with out any stock images. anyways onwards to webdesign. most sites are indeed made with photoshop. the cropping tool is not the same as psp 8 you have to self crop it. now im sure i can find you soem web template tutorials if you want. i havent made any but i find a good way to give a prefessional look is to play with blending options and custom shapes you can do SOO much with layer styles but it does take some learning. if you want i can share soem tuts or psds that i have bought or made on other forums i can also point you in the direction of some styles that could help you learn the basic methods. i hope i was helpful if you have any other questions you can ask here or make a new thread. and you can also check out the tip thread here: Clickdeviantart.com also has SOO many tuts youll be over whelmed lol CLICKCLICKthose twos should take you to some webstie template tutorials. again i hope i was helpful and i hope you come back with your templates and other designs id love to see them

Photoshop is more featureful than paintshop pro which is more aimed at simplicity. For cropping you can either use the rectangular marquee tool and go image-crop (or maybe edit-crop, I can't really remember lol). Or you can go image-canvas size and set the width and height that you want to crop. Devianart has some of the best tutorials around but another good site is good-tutorials.com (aptly named ). If you ever need any more help with anything specific then we're always here to give a helping hand - I think most of us use CS2 or at least photoshop.

www.pixel2life.com = God. Go there now. There are a lot of tutorials, and all of them are very easy to follow. There's even a whole PS category about web design, so you should check that one out. Photoshop is definatly better than PSP, you just have to get used to it. It'll be a bit of an adjustment, but once you go through some tutorials and see just what PS can do you'll love it. It can be used for much more than photo editing. A good majority of the people's sigs here are made with PS, and only a small portion of them are photo manips. You have to eyeball with the crop tool, but once you get it close to what you want there is a way to get it exact. I use CS, but this should be the same. Go go Image --> Canvas Size and enter the pixels you want. If you have any other specifc questions don't hesitate to PM me.

Photoshop is a much more powerful piece of software than PSP. Yes, you can make graphics, and you can make some truly killer web designs. I've made a lot of good web interfaces thanks to it. If you want to see some of what I've made with it web layout wise, check my deviantArt. It's a very advanced program and takes getting used to. We have a tips thread here that will grow over the next few weeks, and you can check out tutorial sites. Pixel2Life and Good Tutorials are two very good tutorial sites. I do actually have an advanced/web design training CD for Photoshop. Don't know if I'll ever use it You could try to see if you can find that. Photoshop is, all in all, a very powerful tool for web design. You don't really beat it for the design. Once you're used to it and get the style right, you can do anything, professional, abstract, metal, whatever. If you do ever have any questions, just post them here, one of us will answer them.
