Its good for a first try.
In fact....very good.
I like the smudging/blending of all the images although it seems a bit too cluttered. Background could use some work... even a simple gradient would be better. Black is just... too plain. Try darkening the edges of the banner with a black-transparent gradient. It'll give the center more focus.
The text could use some work. It seems very plain and... 2D. Either find a new font or put use a text reflection or something to make the text more exciting.
As i said before, a VERY good fist attempt.

That is really good Umaril. Please add a bit to your rates: what you liked, what can be improved, and a general comment. I've warned you already and won't again. Thread starter, ensure any images over 500px wide are posted as links.
Anyway, enough of the rules being dictated to you (=P), now for a rate. I think that it's good for a first, but could do with improvement. You've used far too many stocks here in my opinion. You need one to stand out, and possibly the rest then blurred in the background. Try to cut them out completely, don't leave a background. You can then make a visible background. Work with smudging (or start with brushing), and get used to GIMP's functions. Try to create your own unique style. The text could do with a little improvement. Try to bring it out a little: work with colours, styles and the like. Try to read a few tutorials and incorporate them into your work. Also, experiment a little. GIMP can be very powerful; you just have to get it to work out properly. Good luck

How do you use downloaded text? Edit: I tried the tutorials but they are too hard to understand I notice that when people here make images, They have whatever color background (Black, brown etc. ) and have say, a person's face from a differnet image on the background. What I want to now is how to cut an irregular shape from another image and paste it to a different b/g like a lot of people do in sigs.

Try using the Magic Wand tool if the shape is a diff. color then the background or the Freehand Lasso tool. Also, an eraser with a small round brush works fine. Just takes a bit more time.
