OK, this might sound stupid, but how do you use fonts that you have downloded for your images?

Did you download the font into the program's font folder? (Not sure if you have to do this for PS. You do in GIMP, though.)

I downloaded it and when I click one of the files displayed it shows font sizes with "the quick brown fox...etc." after it, what do I do then?

Okay. When it asks where to save the file, locate the folder called gimp 2.2.1 or w/e version of gimp you have. Then go into that folder and find the "Font" folder. Open it up and save the file that contains the font into that folder. Then, re-start GIMP and use the Text Tool and scroll down to the font you just downloaded.

Now that you're here, how do you make scan lines on The GIMP?

Well... erm...
I just use fill-bucket > fill w/ pattern > the pattern that looks like caution tape > then just fill it white and black and set it on overlay. I've nvr really needed scan-lines so I don't worry about it to much. I'm sure there is a plug-in somewhere that will make them for you. Just search google.
