Should the national government of only one country be allowed to close a site that exists on the World Wide Web? (No matter how many pretty badges they think make them look important?)

(No matter how many pretty badges they think make them look important?) thats a good point but if www.atdhe.net/ has an american server, than yes its their right but otherwise i dont think so.it should be up to the regional webserver being it in the usa or whatever else

This is the result of a new law that's been passed within the last couple of months. Basically, the government can seize any domain hosting illegal data. They haven't seized the servers (yet), they've only hijacked the domain name.

Homeland Security have been seazing the domains of sports streaming sites. They've also gone after the domains of torrent sites, warez sites and even fake merchandise sites. ...does the government do crazy crap where they like log every IP and report it for going there if it's been seized? I'm a very paranoid person >_> inb4 everyone here insults my intelligence If they do, there's nothing they can do with the data. Besides, users of these sites never get into trouble for watching. The people who own these domains aren't even having criminal charges brought against them as far as I can work out, leaving them free to relocate to a non-US controlled domain. Should the national government of only one country be allowed to close a site that exists on the World Wide Web? (No matter how many pretty badges they think make them look important?) Hell no! A lot of people in the tech industry have been concerned about it for a while, but only now, with these seizures has it been thrust into the public. And I hope awareness is raised even further and enough pressure can be put on the U.S. to reform the entire way the system works. (I'm a dreamer!)

if people are hosting illegal information, than people from any country have the right to get rid of it... i don't see why you're defending said site when they are hosting illegal information that is against the regulations of the 'world wide' internet. o_0

If someone was hosting child porn wouldn't you want someone to have the power to take the site down. I know we don't want the government involved with everything but as long as it isn't censorship like they have in china i have no problem with them taking down illegal stuff.

Silly feds. It takes a few minutes to a few hours to direct to a new domain. It takes the same amount of time to make a new proboards forum but ProBoards still deletes bad forums
