not condoning this in any way, and they're too young. just saying, funny how it's ripping on it entirely the whole article, as though the kids are armed with spiked maces, and then way at the bottom says, it's just wrestling. in a completely wrong setting and everything. but still wrestling. just as legal as karate or judo or any martial art you can come up with. edit: found the video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dux5sd-QDDg.

My god that article was atrocious. So incredibly biased.
How is this any different from wrestling, boxing, or karate?

My god that article was atrocious. So incredibly biased. How is this any different from wrestling, boxing, or karate? MMA involves fighters that have been training with boxing/wrestling and karate teachers, and to bring children as young as 8 into the sport just shows how bad people have turned since the government raised school funds.

It wasn't MMA. It was what anyone in the USA would consider a wrestling match within their age bracket - its just that in the UK we don't have amateur wrestling like most American schools seem to, so its pretty unusual to see a bunch of 8 year olds taking part in i .

While I can understand some of the frustration I really dont see the huge problem. Ive seen worse than this at martial arts clubs (in terms of potential for injury etc). Yes at those clubs they practice discipline, how not to hit when sparring etc, but mistakes do happen even there. Its only if you read the full article, or see videos on it that you realize the only real problem here is the lack of protective gear. Everything else is only as bad as something you could potentially see at martial arts clubs anyway. If the kids are willing, and the parents are willing it really isnt any different from any other sport. You see catastrophic injuries in all sports. How injured can you possibly get when your not even allowed to punch and kick? No one would say anything if the kids were doing rugby, pretty sure there is more room for injury there for example. Bias reporting can make all the difference in public perception. Had this been told differently people would be more posting in support of it, especially when you realize just how dedicated some of the kids are. They want to do it, they enjoy doing it. How really is that any different from any other sport, or again, kids that enjoy fights in martial arts? Its the same as everything else. potential for danger if its not regulated, but safe enough if its watched/managed carefully My god that article was atrocious. So incredibly biased. How is this any different from wrestling, boxing, or karate? MMA involves fighters that have been training with boxing/wrestling and karate teachers, and to bring children as young as 8 into the sport just shows how bad people have turned since the government raised school funds. Right, but this isnt MMA, for starters your not even allowed to throw a basic punch, much less anything that would fall under something trained in boxing.

I'm somewhat against this. 8 years old is just too early to learn deadly fighting moves. Kids at this age don't even necessarily know everything between right and wrong as far as 101 stuff goes. What would happen if they used an advanced leglock (like a kneebar) on someone at school? Then what? The parents would look like fools for allowing there child to acquire MMA moves.
^ I say enroll your kid in at like age 13 and up.
Self defense is another story. Your kid is learning how to defend themselves and discipline that goes with it such as don't start a fight.

While martial arts teaches you to defend yourself, there are plenty of cases where a kid goes off and uses it for offense. Its the same concept really. Ultimately its down to the kid

The same thing could be said of parents who shove kids of a young age in front of a camera as an actor(ess). Most kid actors/esses end up not having a normal life etc etc. Thats all for money afterall. As long as in this case if the kids want to stop the parents are fine with that, I see no problem. At least these parents are involved with their kids. Most kids out on the streets causing trouble get no attention from their parents whatsoever.
