In the 'golden days' of v4 it was possible for 'Not Activated' members to log-in to a forum and post messages. Under the update v5 format, it would appear that 'Not Activated' members no longer have this facility. When they log-in to a forum they are redirected to make an activation link before they can Post. Why have ;Not Activated' members lost the message posting facility under the new v5 set-up? To be an Activated Member is not really important. It just means that the forum moderator has the facility to send them an email. On the other hand, Not Activated members do not want this service. midgetcarpanorama.proboards.com/

Hi speedstox12, With the new Global Login system we require you to use your email address as your personal identifier, along with your password. This is due to the fact that you can now have multiple accounts, on multiple forums, all linked to a single 'Master' account (your Global Login).

This is due to the fact that you can now have multiple accounts, on multiple forums, all linked to a single 'Master' account (your Global Login). That being the case, and the explanation looks sound, I guess that some forums are going to lose some long-standing members who previously hav not wanted to be Activated.

Activation is just a way of saying "we have confirmed that your email is valid". It's just how we (and almost every other website online that requires registration) verify that the person is real, and gives them a way to reset their password in the case of them forgetting it. In any other case, securely verifying a users identity would be virtually impossible.

Well, on the old v4 site I used to check the members list and it showed members who were Not Activated but they were then still making Posts on the Midget Car Panorama site. Now since going v5 they don't seem to visit the site any more.

Now since going v5 they don't seem to visit the site any more. The member activation status (activated or not activated) in v4 does not directly affect their activation status in v5. However, if the user had an invalid email address, and continued to try to use an invalid address, they cannot activate their account during the v5 account upgrade process. During the upgrade process, there are multiple occasions (see my guide in the Support FAQ at the top of this board) during the process that the user can give a valid email address. Even after attempting to register with an invalid email address, you can still change the email address associated with the account, and subsequently verify it normally.

The Not Activated members used to just log in. One of them - a personal friend - said he just cannot waste time on all the NEW nonsense (what is suggested in the reply here). He doesn't want to have an Activated account and receive email messages from the forum because of this. He just wanted to read and enjoy making replies to other Posts. Now he says he cannot be bothered any more and made a rather rude comment in regard to the "v5 upgrade" which I won't mention here.

Hi speedstox12, Other then the initial activation email, and confirmation, the forum should not send any sort of emails at all. If you receive any, check to make sure you have email notifications turned off in your profile. The only other possible way to receive an email is from staff (which you can also turn off in your settings!)

I want to know why Not Activated members cannot enter the Midget Car Panorama forum under v5 when they could do so with the old v4 format?

Looking at Michaels posts above, he does touch on why [activation is now a necessity in the global accounts]. But perhaps you are asking something different to what was perceived from your initial post. What is the error message they are receiving exactly when they are attempting to login? A summary. There is no activated setting on a per forum basis. Everyone who is a member of a ProBoards forum will have a global ProBoards account, and it is this account which has to be activated for as Michael said, to verify the email address is true and owned by the person using the account. It is a one time process when you initially login on v5, and shouldn't be an ongoing issue after that. That is the only thing the members will have to do and it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes

In other words ALL Midget Car Panorama forum members must be activated in the future under the change (I won't say "upgrade") from v4 to v5?

Correct, all members will need to activate their account with the v5 upgrade. And those that do not will be lost to the forum?

In v4 it used to be possible tell under Members which were Activated and which were Not Activated. This does not seem to apply under v5. I have planned a cull of Not Activated members and would like to know how to trace these members please. midgetcarpanorama.proboards.com/
