Participated - Not the same

ON here, PBS, currently it shows 12 threads in the popup for me.
On smangii.proboards.com it shows 13 for myself.
For Simie on Slightly Insane it shows 16, and for someone else, Xikeon it showed 5 and then 7.

Participated topics is not a fixed amount of topics, they're the recently participated topics within a time/date range.

But it keeps alternating for me from anywhere between 10 - 13, it's not consistent at all, and the same for the other people.
What is the date range? I for one have definitely participated in more than the 10 - 13 it keeps showing.

It's based on a number of variables, including posting frequency. Once a topic falls off the list, it never comes back (or so I've been told), to prevent you from being assaulted by necroposts. 


Additionally, I just spoke to Keith about this and he added this:

"We grab the threads of the 30 most recent posts that a member has made, with no age limit. If it seems like the number of threads varies, that's because it does - we're checking posts. If you post 30 times in one thread, then only that thread will show up."

So it's 30 most recent posts and not the 30 most recent topics I have posted in?
It used to be the latter and I have no clue why it has changed. It was all fine and ordinary yesterday, and today it is not, it's like this.

My last reply to that before was May 12th, and before just replying to that I had "11 participated threads", now since doing that I have 12.

Yes, its 30 most recent posts. So if 15 of those were in the same thread as another post, you would only have 15 participated topics (hypothetically).

In that thread, it had obviously fallen off your participated list (because as you said, you are a frequent poster) and then you posted in the same thread again, and it returned to the list.

Right ok, I actually do completely get it now (I re-read the previous post too where you quoted Keith, and it made sense after that).

I am just very very confident though that this didn't act like this way before, and it did used to go by the 30 most recent threads you participated in. It's just better if it's threads, and makes so much more sense.

This was changed to lower the "cost" of participated topics. The new format is "cheaper" (meaning its easier to load) and means greater overall forum speed.

Edit to add: The fundamentals are exactly the same, we've just cut out what is mostly irrelevant data for most users.

One final question though to be sure I fully understand:

Say I have now replied to 30 different topics with my 30 latest posts, that means all 30 will show in my participated.
Someone else then replies to one of those 30 topics, so I then reply to it, does that now mean that one of those 30 topics will be removed from my list? Giving me now only 29?

If so, that just seems stupid

Precisely. This might not make sense to you, but from an efficiency standpoint (and to the vast majority of users) this will work better for them. If you need a long list of recent posts, you still have the recent posts and recent threads page accessible from your profile.

I click on participated too much to forfeit it for profile > recent.
Participated for me is a HUGE amazing feature, or rather was.

This is such a huge shame and unfortunate backwards step for you guys

But anyway, it is what it is and if it's for performance efficiency, you guys are not going to undo the changes, so I may as well save my breath and exit now
