Hi Todge, is it possible to show several 'Recently Updated Threads Sidebar' panels at the same time? The intend is to show different 'Recent Threads' when user is on different board. Can 2 instances coexists in a forum? Would be difficult to allow it otherwise?

Hi Todge I love this plugin, it's so handy! I have no idea why a sidebar and this feature are not integrated into the forum, made as an enable/disable option like the Shoutbox for those who want/don't-want one. Anyway, I had an idea. Right now the links in the sidebar take us to the top of the first page of a thread, which is great for a new thread, but if it's a thread many pages long and possibly one a poster has already been participating in, most likely if they see a new post in that thread in the sidebar, they are going to want to go to the most recent posts, not go all the way back to page one, then have to click another link to get to the last page. Example: If the Recently Update Threads Sidebar was installed here in the support forum, and it registered a new post in the thread, it would create the following link: support.proboards.com/thread/508294/updated-threads-sidebarWhich would take you to the first post on the first page. But either of the two links below support.proboards.com/threads/recent/508294/support.proboards.com/threads/recent/508294/updated-threads-sidebarwould take you to the last post on the last page. Would it be possible to make the RUT sidebar plugin make links like that to the last post in the thread instead of the first? And yes, I understand and am sorry about your lack of a working computer(been there myself not too long ago), I was mainly wondering if this would be possible for a future version of the plugin. Seems like it would be just a matter of having it replace forumurl/thread with forumurl/threads/recent/ while keeping everything after that?

Can 2 instances coexists in a forum? Would be difficult to allow it otherwise? It's possible, but not with this plugin. You'd need to use a different key to achieve that, and that in itself could impact on the plugin as the required key has less storage than the current one.

nohaterville.proboards.comHi Todge, Just realized a member had replied to a thread on my forum and it didn't show up in the updated thread box. It shows up for me every time that I create or reply to a thread. Do you have any idea why it would not work when my member replied to a thread? fyi: His post showed up in the "New Posts" page. He had just joined and it was his very first post ever on the forum. He was replying to a thread that I (admin) created. His post was the very first reply to the thread that he was replying to. I have the plug in inside of a div that I created on the top of my page. I waited an hour after I had noticed that it didn't show up before I created this post to you.

Not Todge here, but two possible things leap out at me. First, it's a random hiccup. I had a post of mine as an Administrator on my forum not show up the other day, the only time it's done that out of many posts I've made(I just bumped the thread and it then showed up fine). Second, the member is posting via mobile. Plugins don't work with the mobile code, so there's nothing on their page to send the information to the plugin key when they post. You can see if a member is posting via mobile by looking at the top of their post, shown after the date and time of their post. Example: September 14, 2014 at 12:51pm via mobile Hope that helps.

There is also an 'issue' with the way keys are written to.
When a page loads, it also loads the key, obviously, but then if that key is updated, the version of the key loaded with the current page is updated, not necessarily the actual current version.
So....
If more than one person is authoring a post at the same time, there will effectively be more than one version of the key in use, and the last one to be written to will take precedence, overwriting the keys that have already been updated moments earlier, so it would seem some posts may have been ignored. I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done about that, but hopefully that happens so rarely that it's not too much of an issue.

Okay Todge, I see. But I think what is happeneing is what adminabp said. (btw thanks adminabp) Everyone whose posts aren't showing up are posting via mobile. Which in my eyes makes this plug in and every other one pretty much worthless, seeing how there is probably even more mobile users than computer users these days. I have had a site that I've tried to keep active for what seems like forever now. Going on 5 years. And with my experience with Proboards, there is ALWAYS a problem!! It's always like they never fully think out their decisions!! Why would they create these "plug ins" knowing they aren't capable of working with mobile devices when they have to know that mobiles are probably more than half of users!! Just so annoying! Well I thought this was a long waited bad a*s plug in, but with this mobile issue, it seems kind of pointless to me now, along with the rest..

Well I thought this was a long waited bad a*s plug in, but with this mobile issue, it seems kind of pointless to me now, along with the rest.. You're welcome. Keep in mind that mobile versions of websites are convenience-oriented, and as such often somewhat stripped-down and simplified versions of those made for computers with full web browsers, larger screens and more memory. For example, I still have an old-school flip-phone that I can use to bid on auctions on eBay from. The mobile version of the site it accesses isn't practical to surf their entire site for shopping, but I can use it to keep up with what I am following and bidding on while on the go. And this issue doesn't apply to all mobile devices, only those using the mobile app. to access the forum. I have a tablet and the full page, plugins and all, work just fine on it using both Firefox and Chrome web browsers.

Okay appreciate you helping me understand that adminabpBut after all, there is absolutely no way that this plugin can track posts made via mobile?

Okay appreciate you helping me understand that adminabpBut after all, there is absolutely no way that this plugin can track posts made via mobile? As I understand it, the plugin doesn't detect anything, it works by logging data to a key when a user posts. To log that data, the plugin would need to be running on the webpage the post is being made from. There is also an 'issue' with the way keys are written to. When a page loads, it also loads the key, obviously, but then if that key is updated, the version of the key loaded with the current page is updated, not necessarily the actual current version. So.... If more than one person is authoring a post at the same time, there will effectively be more than one version of the key in use, and the last one to be written to will take precedence, overwriting the keys that have alsready been updated moments earlier, so it would seem some posts may have been ignored. I'm afaid there's nothing that can be done about that, but hopefully thzt happens so rarely that it's not too much of an issue. Eek! So it basically takes a 'snapshot' of the data for the sidebar when a page loads, then updates that snapshot when someone posts? If I'm understanding you correctly, say I hit 'reply' in a thread to open a reply page, and then take awhile composing my thoughts and editing what I wrote a bit before posting(I tend to do that a lot), or make a lengthy post, or have to take some time with adding images/video, or have to stop and go do something else before finally hitting 'create post', that any posts made to any other threads in that interim would get wiped out in the sidebar when I finally post? Does the data in the key have to be completely overwritten like that? It can't just be 'contributed' to in some way? It's a shame the plugin can't just get the information it needs from the Recently Updated Threads page of the forum itself, or at least from the source of that page's data.

It's a shame the plugin can't just get the information it needs from the Recently Updated Threads page of the forum itself, or at least from the source of that page's data. I assume you meant the Recently Updated "Posts" page. But yes I agree, this seems like it would work a lot simpler and more effective as it wouldn't miss a post. Also, it seems this way, it would pull the posts made by mobile users also, as they are already on the Recently Updated Posts page.
