Help Making my board look more attractive

I would like help as to how i see others have great boards.. i know html and all but dontknow how to place it inthere and where to start with.. any help would be Greatfull thanks ...

my site looks Really crappy right now i want that seal bg without it tiling like that.. and some Dark purple colors like my banner at the top.. i want it to look really clean and smooth .. thanks again
