Well, you do not pay for google, they add you on their own by going through your site and indexing it. It is completely free. Your sister was wrong about google lowering your site on the list due to added to their list. They do that by when they look at your site, by the quality and the look of it. It is definitely not by how your sister said it was. Just keep working on your site and you should get members who want to join in no time.

Paying for advertisement is a waste unless you have money to spare. Don't save up for it, is what I'm saying. There are hundreds of other ways to advertise your site without paying places that are equally as good as the free ones. Don't waste your money.

Nope, don't waste your money.
Ways that I have found are good ways to get members:
Join a few forums related to your topic with a good amount of members. Add your website to your profile and add the website link to your signature (if the rules allow) and post, post, post!
Affiliates. It doesn't take long to become one with a site and it results to a nice amount of new members.
Support sites like this one. Normally, they have an 'advertisements' board, just add your website to the board. (I have gotten 4 members from ProboardsSupport and 3 from another Support Forum, so it is safe to say, this helps).
*Remember though, it is better to have 10 good members that post a lot and fill up your boards than to have 100 members that never post. If you forum is filled up well, guests will want to join more. So don't get too caught up and spend all your time getting new members when you should be focusing on those members that you already have and you don't want them to be driven away because their 'admin' is too busy getting new people*

So don't get too caught up and spend all your time getting new members when you should be focusing on those members that you already have and you don't want them to be driven away because their 'admin' is too busy getting new people* I have been equally spending my time with everything. I send out mails letting my members know what is going on, what has been added and everything else to keep them imformed. When that is done, I send out a bump to mu advertise post here on Proboards and send out bulletins on mine and my fiance's 2 Myspace profiles (I know one of hers focuses on wiccan stuff, so I know they can put this forums to use). I have already jojined the advertising forums so far and I'm looking forward on searching for some magical forums to search and join, especially if I can get a few members from there (especially those forums that specialise in some fantasy things like Harry Potter and some games). I also look for things to do for my forum members and keep trying not too put up too much so not to drown everyone with too many threads. So far I have 18 total members yet I can't do much now because new members have stopped joining up and the current members have stopped coming back, as much as I've been keeping the forums active by doing something new every day, so I don't know if I'm not doing enough or I'm doing too much at once.

Mine was in google in a dash. lol that's funny because my advertisement post here is on the first page on the Yahoo search, and the post was made about a month or so AFTER the forums I put in for the searches on Yahoo and Google. does this make sense?

Just keep working on your site and you should get members who want to join in no time. Pikablu, I have made mine so to keep everything included in the Magical Norm, and yet keep it to the minnimum so it's not huge. I have thought of every possibility, added enhancements, added this, added that, advertised it, Googled/Yahoo register'ed it, advertised it more here, asked for rates and suggestions (with no reples from anyone yet), and yet I can't get the darned thing off the ground. As much as I've tried "advertising", it seems that I can't get the right people to join and be active. The site is getting hits though!

So far, the best things that worked for me were: 1) Word of mouth. I've managed to get quite some people to join by extensive talking through IM. If you know where to find them, you have a good chance of getting at least one of them to join. And happy members could convince friends and maybe even family to join your board as well. 2) Sig advertisement. This proved especially useful when a member made a nice banner that would fit in my sig on nearly every board I went to (as far as they would allow it). 3) Joining boards with similar themes and be active enough to have your sig stand out. Nothing like 'stealing' members from a different board to get yours going. I don't really know if posting your site in your profile works as well as all these other techniques, but if people visit your profile a lot, I wouldn't be surprised if that helps a bit too, so it's at least worth a try. It can't do much harm anyway. Same goes for affiliates (though I could find that out by asking people how they found the board).

i think word of mouth is good... however this might be a little off topic ..with the proboard linked to a website is it a good idea to have merchandice to buy off the site or does that seem like your luring people in and blackmailing them to come whats your opinions on this
