Just to add to what xkamelx said, you'd find that very few people here would allow you to advertise on their forum. There are several forums I know of that are for advertising purposes, but aside from those, you wouldn't find many forums that would allow you to advertise, other than in your signature. To most people it is seen as a measure of desperation. You know what I think? Advertising sites are crap. Why? Well, it's basically this: someone comes, posts a link, nothing else, then forgets the site. And, of course, they don't check any other links. I myself used to have an active board, but a major problem was that I had an advertising board, and one member posted 43 threads with a link and nothing else. It completely made me mad! And of the 100-200 members, about 30 just came in because they saw the advertising board, posted once, and then left. The only people who check links on advertising boards are the admins. Many members just don't have time to check out other links, myself included. All this did was make a board with 200 threads and about 250 posts, meaning only 1 in 4 threads had a reply (there were more threads than replies to threads). So what I did was transfer an Advertising board to a Get Opinions About Your Board. This I feel is much better, because guests will be attracted, but for once, the threads can actually generate a lot of replies. Of course, I made the GOAYB members only. So basically, advertising boards get members with 1 posts for your site and on top posters, you see stuff like, "Top poster: Admin with 500." Second top: Member with 1. Then another person with 1. It's stupid. Well that was my comment, what do you think? I disagree. People will check the forums out sometimes but sometimes they don't. All I just do really is post my site's link in advertising boards or affiliate with other sites or put my forum links in my signature which I very much like to do. Also you shouldn't make the advertising TOO Desperate because no one is going to join a desperate forum. All you need to advertise is to make a tag line for your forum and what it is about so people can be intrested in. But don't go too mad if no one joins, you need patience. That's what I do, I just wait for people to join

I guess that could be true.
Do you think it's better to post your site on a LARGE advertising board over a SMALL advertising board?
For the small board, less people would see your link, but there will also be fewer OTHER people advertising your site, and if an admin really wants members, he/she may even JOIN your site.
Whereas on a large site, more people will see your link, but less are likely to join. Why would an admin need to join a site to help increase traffic when their site is already active?
I choose the small boards over the large ones.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but making a Myspace and/or Facebook for your Forum is EXCELLENT for traffic and gaining members. I made a myspace for my forum and I've got so many people at least checking it out; and I've gotten several new members thanks to it.
Creating a Myspace/facebook for your forum is really helpful because you can have a whole page just for the forum, and you can include all of the information you want along with graphics and statistics.

That's what I do, I just wait for people to join Well, I somewhat disagree with what's been said, and agree at the same time. I don't like when people advertise everywhere, it is annoying, but I don't think people should get rid of the boards completely. Making it into a Get Opinons About Your Board seems smart, but you could also just disable post counts on the advertising board, so that there aren't "Top Poster Admin: 500, User 1: 1, User 2: 1" and so on. And, if no one's going to join a desperate forum, how did all of the bigger forums like a few of the Harry Potter ones, or designing ones get members? They all had to start at some point, with 0 members and posts. It's not like it's impossible. Also, some people don't just post their link and leave. I don't, and if I leave a website it's because I've joined too many others. Some people don't have the time to browse the 5 pages some boards may have. To solve this problem by the way, I would clear an advertisement board every month or so, depending on the board's activity, and then making one thread with all advertised boards. It's easier, more compact, and helps everyone. That's just my opinion, but feel free to disagree. I won't bite....much.

It's easier, more compact, and helps everyone. That's just my opinion, but feel free to disagree. I won't bite....much. (Wow... this quote box is getting bigger) Well, sure, they started somewhere along those lines. It's also inpossible to have 0 members because technically, the admin is a member. As for advertisig, it's a great way to boost those numbers. Like in the many, many posts before this, it is good to advertise to make your site grow. Some are so unheard of, they need to get it out there. Some are so popular, nobody's going to know that it's there until they hear about it. Once they do, they will slowly but surely gain a lot of members. As for your method, well, what would you rather do? Read a boring link to a site you don't know... or look at a beautiful banner the wil catch one's eye and pull you in? Plus you could make some restricitions to advertising, like I see in some forums. Liike, you could limit it to being a member or a board's activeness (or posting numbers if you want to steer that direction). So, there's no true bad side to advertising, just bad methods of it, that's all.

No you're best off putting a link in your signature so that others may see it & you don't get a warning Read through this post (& the rules) to see how best to advertise. Get yourself some affiliates & make eye catching banners perhaps I'm having problems advertising at the moment & I've been doing it for as long as my forum's been open, nobody wants to sign up, any fresh ideas?
