How To Advertise Your ProBoard

I just posted in another thread that many times I get a referral back to my forum for people searching my forum name NOT typing in the URL.
Which shows you can get your forum on people's lips so to speak (no pun intended!)
Word of mouth still does absolutely nothing for me & I've been doing it that way a lot lately too.
I'm also reboosting my URL search engine submissions to keep us at the top.
We have some strange referrals mind you!

I think that affiliating your site with others of a different genre is a great idea. ^^ Some people might be looking for a site like yours, and if they notice the advertisement, they might as well join. I notice I get more members that way.

Also, adding my site to google might help me out a bunch....I joined my first proboards site through google, and I made my own about five months later. ^^

Here are a few methods that I have found to be succesful. I am a member of many yahoogroups pertaining to my board subject. I make sure that not a single post goes out on these groups without my link included.

I also work on hosting events off the board. Granted if your board is not an area specific one this won't help.

Fliers. . . and I mean lots of fliers. Are you doing sports? How about seeing if a local bar/sports club will let you put up fliers? Are you doing something family related (like I am), hit the laundromat... Figure out who your target is and put a flier in their hand (or on a board that they can see).

Find other groups that have similar focus. Offer a section for them to advertise their group for free. In my case it is a board for local support while my board is regional. . . then once these people have sent me their free ad to post I ask them if they wouldn't mind telling their members about us.

BE NICE.

Make people talk about your group. If there is a really exciting discussion going on they will tell their IM friends.

I was just going to ask if using fliers would be appropriate for advertising my website because that is exactly what I am going to do. Of course I am going to advertise all over the internet but last time that really didn't work so I'm aiming for something new this time. But, from prevous posts I've read, I guess it's okay to use fliers.

I've found that search engine op. can really make a difference in your forum's "importance". Increasing keyword density without going overboard, including a relevant topic keyword in your forum's title, and submitting to Google can boost your rankings in just a month or two.

I've been advertising on people's boards as a guest lately.
Be sure to read their rules though, they sometimes have a pre-made form for you to fill out, or want a link back, an AD or somewhere to post on yours.
I would be (& am) clear & concise, & not make it seem like just another spammer (as guests sometimes do!)
I've gotten mixed feedbacks, but it's a great way of getting your forum out there.
As said before, people might be into Star Wars AND Horses for example.
Don't always stick to you own theme.
I always stress that (& I've always found it common courtesy anyway) I've linked them back & tell them where to find it (I haven't got main page affiliation)
