Well, I suppose that could have been a lesson in how NOT to advertise.
Juuusttt kidding. While spam is annoying, it's actually kind of a good way... if you're looking for hits, and not members. Because if you annoy people with spam, they may come look at your site, but chances are they'll be like, "Umm, the admin is sooo annoying, no WAY im joining their board."

Do not respond to obvious spam. This too is against the rules.

This is NOT TOLERATED. There will be no name calling and you will not talk to the members like that, especially on the boards. If you cannot act your age, then you are free to leave. If you stay and continue, I will not give you that option.

Here's an idea I thought about - if you use YahooGroups, you could put a link in your email signature to your forum, and I believe it would show up in your post. Has anyone tried this? Is it generally allowed? seems like a decent idea.

I've used MSN groups & Yahoo Groups to advertise mine, as well as a few 'friend' pages like MySpace, but so far there's mixed stats.
I very often look at my advertising & see what works & what doesn't, then try a more successful system.
It's a shame I don't get feedback on where my members came from, so I could see what's working.
Though I do use StatCounter & Extreme Tracking for all my stats.

Well I did a quiz in quizilla like: Do you like (type of site)?
And I put a few questions and at the result I posted the board's description and link. That got me a few members. Also when you are a member on other boards you can write your site's link, that worked too. Plus I added my site's link in google, so when people search they find my board's link ;D

I generally just go by word of mouth. I don't try and make extra work for myself when i already have loads. If people don't join then they miss out is how i look at it ;D

I think that the best way of advertising is advertising on a website you have been a member of for a long time. That way, the people will know you better and trust you a bit more, where as if you join and advertise two hours later, people might not even visit because they don't that much about you.

Quizilla boards help, also, have a competition where you get your members to advertise you, that way it get's them interested and they are going to websites that you may not visit.
