Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think "Wtf" is allowed..
I just tell all my friends to join, then I submit my site to Google.

I will advertise anywhere, anysite I don't care it is new or inactive. I submit my site anywhere I can for free and not pay money.
I think hitting sites with tons of members and active is maybe good because they might come from there to my site or something. More of a chance kind of.

I actually have had mixed success with advertising. My forum, which I've had since April 2007, is still kinda small, but I think I've figured out the trick. You make it as good as you can to start with, and keep improving it forever afterwards. Keep it active, too. Go on every day and post something. Tell as many friends as you can. If it gets a little lonely at first, create a second account and post back and forth between your first and second. Join another site, participate in that one, and post a link to your own in somewhere. And, most importantly, move so you're sort of fishing for members. They'll come when they're good and ready, so don't give up.

Affiliates - Contrary to popular belief, affiliates do work. I, and many other has received members from affiliates from other forums. It is also not a good idea to only affiliate with boards of the same genre, For example, if you own a Harry Potter forum, why only affiliate with other Harry Potter forums. Those people who will be seeing your banner already have a place to discuss Harry Potter. I have found it best to affiliate with all kinds of different sites. for example, if a HP forum affiliates with a sports forum, then a member of the sports forum may also like Harry Potter, and may not have a place to discuss Harry Potter. So don't restrict your affiliates to your own genre, affiliate with all types of forums. Just a small question How do you get affiliates?

I had one site that was doing very badly- i never closed it incase it picked up. I can't exactly say it picked up but i got members, just from one affilate banner! i wish i had added more because then i could have worked, but they really do work- alot better than just placing an advert on a site anyway...

You just have to keep at it until your board succeeds. I just opened mine and im gonna keep joining topsites and boards and hope for the best! Making your own topsite helps also and meta tags help as well.

Mmm this is all fine and dandy but how do you find affiliates? Hi ~ you find other sites with 'affiliate' or 'affiliation' areas, or simply just post a thread here in the "Your Board: Advertise" section titled 'Looking For Affiliates'.

I also index it on Google but couldn't find them either. Google has never worked for any site that I submit.

Is there a place on here where I can post a banner and invite people to be affiliates, and they can post their banners? i.e. somewhere to get in touch? Can I make a thread inviting members to affiliate with me?

Can I make a thread inviting members to affiliate with me? You can do so in the advertising board.I have put my site on there once and the result was unimpressive. I tend to advertise via word of mouth to people I talk to about the forum and its content. It makes it much easier to get active and loyal members. Posting in the Advertising Board does not get active members sometime and it is hard to weed through all of the people and posts for them to find you. I have used Google once or twice, but that tends to fail as well, because unless people search for something in the right way, they never find you there either because you either do not show up or are buried. Affiliates can work sometimes, but it is one of those things that depends on who you affiliate with and how active their forum is to start.

I have always found advertising in large forums to be a good start, more people are likely to notice your forum, also submitting your forum link to major search engines is a good idea, so if people type in certain words your forum may appear.
I think you shouldnt take part in 'join for joins', you wont be able to stay active on all the forums, and neither will your counterpart, and it will just lead you to being banned, especially here.
I havent used affiliating as a form of advertisement for a few months now, because of the problems that i encountered.

Join for joins and PM advertising are a nuisance & I ban it on my forum. I've found the above mentioned to be useful too, though I read it does nothing for some people. I don't think we'd get so many hits if it wasn't for Google & Yahoo indexing! I find personally word of mouth completely useless, I don't do it to the point of annoyance but when I say 'hey come check out my forum' it seems to have the opposite effect I too advertise on forums, sometimes as a guest. But I always try to read people's rules first. My motto is 'you stay linked back as long as we do' & I check my affiliates regularly.
