One of the reasons i wanted to be an admin is because I wanted to build a great community, I wanted to build a fun, enjoyable website where anyone can go and relax. So In September 2015 I opened The Chatterbox Now several months later my forum is doing fairly well, it was definitely a challenge to get it started at the beginning but I of a lot of work into it and now the forum is doing quite well, I feel proud to be an admin of a very friendly community forum.

I didn't really want to be an admin but in 2003 stuff happened on a forum elsewhere and I was the one people wanted to make a forum, proboards was the 3rd forum with the same name but it easily became the best and the one people most enjoyed. Mind you, the msn group did well for 3-4 years before they closed but now in our 13th year proud to be an admin on a superb very active forum.

In all honesty, I just like making forums, mainly. Designing the lay-out, editing pictures for each board, coming up with a story; I love doing it and sometimes I don't even genuinely care wether or not it'll work or not; those times it's just a little creative outlet I suppose. I've lost track of all the forums I worked on just for the sake of working on them. Same goes for those free website and bloghost things, btw. It's just so dang entertaining.
Of course, there's also been cases where I thought 'this is a neat subject, but I'd do it differently'. That's not so much about thinking I can do it better, but more about taking a shard of a concept and making something I one hundred percent like. I mean, that is a nice thing about being admin of course. You can really go wild on the concept you're working with.
One thing I also like about being an admin is that I can make the rules as relaxed as I want to. I always felt like if someone needs a wall of rules to stop them from harassing others or deliberately trying to shock/disgust them, that person wasn't the best addition to a forum anyway. I'd rather have a smaller userbase comprised of people who get along nicely on their own than a very big one that has a fair number of people in it that can not function without a strict set of rules regarding their behavior.
That's just my two cents though.

I am the admin for a few reasons. My board theme is unique. Its probaly the first prison roleplay or at least one of the firsts, so there was no board of this type to join. I also wanted to become an admin, beacause on some sites it seems like the older members think they run the site and I dont want that to happen on my board. Can I join your prison? Along with SirGeorgeWood.

I made my forum because the first 2 roleplay forums I ever made ended up being great in the beginning but now not so much. They have drifted away from roleplaying and are headed more towards virtual pet sites. I also wanted to create something unique and one topic based so that people who enjoyed my forums subject would be able to easily find others who enjoy it too.

I wanted to be admin because i enjoy roleplaying. I first joined a canine rp site that i was staff on--i dont remember what happened but it died after a while so i started making my own. Plus i wanted to be apart of an active friendly site....well some of the sites out there now are NOT friendly. They only care about member count, rather then their members. some aren't even active that much either. the admins are rude and nasty and often act childish and hold grudges---i do not want to be apart of a site that is run like that. i've heard some of the admins of these sites calling potential members derogatory names and making fun of them for a disability...what kind of admin does that to a member? its disgusting! So i wanted to make a site that as friendly, welcoming and rewards members for joining (usually i award them 100 site currency and allow them to choose form the store a free gift) its just my way of thanking them for joining. This is why i became an admin i dont want to behave like those admins out there now...( SOME of them not all!) there are good ones out there. you just gotta look for them.

I'm going to point out that this is a 10-year-old thread (10 as of tomorrow morning)... And it's still going... Alright!
Why do I want to be a forum admin/staff member? I like to contribute to the well-being of anything that I'm involved in. My employer, volunteer groups, website communities... It's because of that drive to contribute to a greater society that I decide to take on the roles that I do, and that's really from any level.
One of the big reasons why I decided to make the website that I'm currently building, aside from being passionate about the topic, is because I wanted to contribute to that community by creating an area where they can all come together in a non-toxic environment and discuss it and connect with others and build relationships. I knew that this could be a really fun place that people could enjoy. Will it be successful? I don't know. We'll see.

I started my own forum because I could not find one that was what I was looking for. There were a couple of RPGs that I found that were similar to what I was looking for, but either their rules allowed for things that I was not comfortable with, like very 'mature' threads etc, where I prefer to keep things a bit more mild etc, or I did not like the plot.
Plus I have been RPing for a lot of years now, and I have come across a few, let's say 'poor' members on other people's forums here and there that I could not do anything about.
I have also been on a couple of forums where members form little cliques and have inside jokes and tent to ignore, or even gang up and pick on other members. (I have even been on one forum where I was RPing with the Admin, then S/he suddenly stopped posting with me and ignored me just after their friend joined and started posting with them.)
I decided to make my own forum and be an Admin: 1. To have a forum that I would be comfortable with, regarding the rules and plot etc. 2. So I could do my best to make sure it would be a nice environment and community to be apart of, where members can contribute their own ideas and suggestions to.
But 6 months in and my forum has not picked up yet. I know it take time to get a forum going, but I don't know if I am doing something wrong, or if it is just one of those thing.

I am not in it for the fact of being an admin. I don't constantly see myself as the admin, I just see myself as a person who created a forum and has forum managing tools as a consequence of that, and with that comes my responsability as the owner, the leader, the one who has to make sure people look up to him and the one who is looked up to for good reasons.
That said, I created my forum with the intent of helping the community I've been on for almost a decade. I'm a Pivot animator and we all relied heavily on Youtube ever since it started out in 2007. It is obvious Youtube doesn't provide a solid structure for such a thing as much as a forum provides. In 2013 I finally became more successful as an animator and I noticed people looked up to me when something happened. They wanted my opinion on things, they liked my input in issues. I know some people who would find this sort of declaration to be arrogant, but I feel I would've been more selfish if I simply tried to be humble and refused to help the community that got me where I am right now with my hobby. I created a forum and figured ProBoards was the best option, as its structure, both for managers and members, supports the community just perfectly. I created the forum along with my friend and we helped the community move there, which kept the community from dying out. I used to be more inexperient with managing at the time, since it was all too abstract for me, but nowadays I feel confident about my managing experience and I feel it even helped me with personal matters. Wouldn't ever give up on my forum, it's an important thing in my hobby's history and I need to remain loyal to it.
Being the admin of a forum I created for the community that looked up to me for decisions, that's a responsability. And I'm not ever letting my community down.

I wanted to open my own forum for fans who are frustrated with the constant bickering, trolling, and anti-"controversial" posts about music and certain pop culture figures, so I created Legends Exclusive. Legends Exclusive is a resurrected board I created back in Jan 2015. I want to give it another shot and a re-branding.
For my other forum, I created it because I felt the Mads Mikkelsen fan base on sites like Tumblr is way too limiting and strange (at times) when it comes to the actor and his friendships with others. The forum is closed to guests (you must register to see it) because Tumblr already got wind of some of our anti-them posts, but it's whatever. The forum is not super active - it's only a few of us - and we post when we have time.

because i was sick and tired of how i got treated on a lot of forums in the past i've been moderator/co admin on a lot of forums i used to be active on and that incls recent years.... again and again and again i got treated like some piece of trash and i always felt like i was the ONLY decent human being on the damn staff teams that thought honesty was important , as well as loyalty
also, one of the most recent staff treatments i had 2 years ago put me over the edge i think, i was done offering my help and being mods on other places. trying to be the best i can and try to make the forum a great place in any way i could possible do so and all i got back was some slave treatment and bitching attitude that was extremely uncalled for all the god damn time
there was also this pokemon community i was a part of but i gave up on that as well a year ago god did i grow to hate that staff team, that team was full of friends politics, something i really do not like AT ALL.... they even went so far they used to have a thread in their staff section where they literally bitched about their members, like to make fun of them and bitch about them like..... who does that? why the hell would you dedicate your free time to do that and make a thread and ..... just wtf, pathetic.
how low can you go.... well the answer is, very low and i have seen it all
there is a lot more where that came from but point is i was done being mistreated as moderator on all kinds of forums where 9 out of 10 staff people were corrupted little fakers
at least now , being an admin myself i was able to create a team where we all are buddies and have respect for each other healthy normal team work without friend politics and all that crap, without stuck up/too full of themselves staff people etc etc i treat people fairly and the other way around + i have managed to surround myself with people that care about honesty as well thank god for that

Personally I feel like my forum idea is rather unique and if it isn't then I can not find anyone else with the same sort of idea that has been presented successfully and neatly in a functioning community which is what I am trying to create. My experience of other forums has been limited to one specific community that I stay in contact with on every forum I have taken part in and I just really wanted to see if I could make an equally wonderful community of people of whom love and respect each other.
Really just the ability to make support groups with common interests is what I really love.
