This is something similar to my thread on being an admin or a regular member. What I want to know is what has made you want to be the admin of your forum instead of just joining an already established forum and helping them to be successful? I still see new Harry Potter forums being opened daily along with LOTR and many others where there are already hundreds of forums that exist with the same topic. Do you feel you can create a better forum than the other people who already have one? If so then why do I see so many people in GOAYB coming in asking for rates with default or single color forums and no other customizations and saying they have the best looking forum ever and everyone needs to come check it out. What makes these people want to create a forum if they are not going to put the effort into it to customize it and provide content for their members. They want their members to do all the work for them while they just sit back and say they have made an awesome forum.
So really, what made you want to become the admin of your own forum and has it worked out for you?
Myself I have always had forums that were on topics that there were not many other boards about and those boards that were around I did not much like the design, activity, and overall feel of the forum myself so I created my own in efforts to have a large thriving community that would be of help to others. I take pride in being an admin and providing someone with a community they can be proud of and they want to return to to chat with others.

I wanted to make me own forum and be Admin because i always wanted to make a RPG that i never saw before (Not saying that they don't exist). At that i created Lugeras (Still under construction) and kept on building it. I'm not saying everyone to join because it looks awesome or it's great. All i'm saying that you should join to see if this kind of RPG is your style, It might be stupid but i like a good clean line of promotion.... So, I just wanted to be an Admin to let people see what i think a text based RPG should be like.

I became an Admin for the factor of that many Resident Evil RPG's are too simple and there isn't a real Survival Horror Factor like in the games. plus I have kewl Ideas that mostly come from my fan fics that I belive may give a fun RPG.

I chose to become an admin, just to give myself something to do at first, however later on and countless Forums later. I realise that I need to put in more to be an admin than just something to do, now I design them, find specific codes to suit my site, and also I wish to become an Admin so that I can show off my skills in another way through my Forum, that way it is giving me something to do whilst also working hard and making myself a better admin so that in the future I will be more experienced.
I hope that made sense by the way.

I became an admin simply because I love the subjects I've made boards about.
I've never been in it for power, success, control over others, to have the most active/well known/popular/biggest forum ever. I do it simply for the love of the subjects I've created message boards about and so far 4/5 of my boards it's worked. Like with my sci-fi board, i cornered an area that was uncovered, catering for a wide range of sci-fi not just one aspect/show, but that was just a bonus, I made it because I was very interested in the subject. My Transformer board I created to talk to fans on my level rather than the big corp Transformer websites that have forums that can be cliquey, and it worked and is successful - but that's just a by product [success], I achieved my goal of talking to and make friends with fans alike myself, but again, I made it because I love the subject.
In the end, that's all there should be.

I became an admin because I wanted to guarantee members that my site would not shut down because I was bored with it. That I wasn't going to give up. Before making my board, I'd been on two different boards that both shut down and I was tired of it. So, I made my own. It's worked out well so far.

I created my Proboards for a variety of reasons.
1) One of the popular Black Greek websites that I belonged to was shut down.
2) I hated the way MSN Groups were.
3) One of the sites that I visited was overrun by Trolls and the software had a glitch that allow people to register names that looked exactly like yours by adding spaces in front of or behind your login, so "The CloneMaster" began posting as other people.
4) I liked the way that access to certain boards could be restricted for certain users. It was like the site had strainers with various size holes to scoop out boards relative to each user.
It's worked out great for me.

I take pride in being an admin and providing someone with a community they can be proud of and they want to return to to chat with others. The reason/s why I decided to become an admin of a proboards forum is because I wanted to get a feel of what it's like to have a forum, because I tried creating websites, and unfortunately, they weren't my cup-of-tea (meaning I honestly wasn't good at it to be honest ) When I first saw MSN spaces, I thought it would be good to use it as a journal type thing, however that too, didn't work out for me, as I recently got flamed by someone (whom I actually knew from high school mind you) telling me that I replied (using spam) to an article on her MSN spaes site - Ms Pixie should know about this since I told her the whole story. Anyway to the point, since that day I really felt let down, but when I found proboards and realised that there was a feature which allowed my to create (and customize I might add) my own forum, which by the way worked, because now noone dare causes me any problems whatsoever; even if they did, I'd catch them in the exact time they'd cause it

Interesting question. I actually have specific reasons to be an admin of my own board. My main theme is joining anime boards or role-play boards.
I've mentioned this before. I have viewed a lot of message boards in my time. I have seen many different ways admins run their board. The admins pretty much don't have much control over their forum. They allow anyone to be a staff member, and not only do they let the staff member be their own individual on the forum, they also let their members be their own individual on the forum. In this case it wasn't good thing because there's no moderation really. I've even seen admins break their own rules and they allow staff to break their own rules! Whenever this occured, I'd get personally attacked by the staff members.
This past year I've gotten very tired of running into message boards where admins just run the board the way they want to without any control (they lose respect). And I'm tired of being nice to staff or members and get disrespected in return. A lot of people out there might think it's okay to control me or say what they want, but it's not, and I don't allow them.
Practically, I've come across a bunch of message boards where admins do not know what they're doing. It might look like it sometimes, but if you've seen the way they treat every member, they don't know what they're doing. Don't be fooled by the layout and good ideas staff members can come up with. Just because someone has original ideas - that's not the only componment that makes them a good staff member.
I have a whole list of what to do and what not to do in my head after observing different ways quite a few admins handle their board. I know I have what it takes to be a good admin. If you talk to me and you've read my advice here, I'm sure you'd agree.
There are quite a few Fruits Basket role-play message boards out here that many of you aren't aware of. They're actually just as popular as Harry Potter forums, but for some reason the admins don't stop to promote them here. I created one because a lot of the admins out there just don't know what it takes to be an admin. They create another board that's not really original, they're layout colors aren't attractive, and almost all of them abandon the board when they don't see members joining after a month.
I decided that when I create this Fruits Basket role-play board, I'm going to have original ideas (which I do), I'm not going to abandon the board no matter how long it takes for members to come, and I'm going to heed (most) the advice given here at ProBoards.
I'm not going to control my members and pressure them into writing. I'm going to control my own emotion, which many staff members fail to do, and be patient.
A lot of the staff members I run into are controling and/or minipulative. I'm neither of those. You'd know if you chat with me online. You can actually tell if a webmaster is minipulative or controling by the way they run their board.
I'm going to extend the members some grace. A lot of the times admins or staff just stay inside a box. Sometimes we forget that everyone is brought up differently. Not everyone has the same wisdom you might have. Instead of plainly warning members, and depending on the offense, I'm going to remind them like a lot of staff members do here.
I'm not an admin nor did I create another Fruits Basket role-play board for competition. It makes me angry when others compare my site to another. I'm aware that can occur, but that's not the reason why I made the board. I made this board to ensure members there will be good staff members and it'll be just a good message board. I created it to support Tayaka and the work she's done, not for competition. I hate competition. A while back it felt like someone was trying to drag me into this whole competition thing. I just ignored it.
Lastly, it's fun putting together the colors, the graphics, and seeing the feedback from your members. It's nice to know all your hard work put forth into the forum is worth it. My favorite thing to do is add different codes not often seen on other forums.

Even though its alot of stress and hard work, it is fun. I wanted to be an admin because I had an idea, and I wanted to 'fit in' but now, I do it for pure pleasure. I made so many different sites, and have finished templates (custom) for alot, but I never even opened half of them.
Its fun to create a board, set it up and let imagination run free.

I wanted to be an admin because I noticed there isnt a lot of airsoft boards out there (good ones that is) and i've succeded. I have one of the coolest skins (in my opinion) now. also i don't have many friends IRL so this was a way to have friends and axhieve greatness at the same time. (to check out my skin click my userbar)

Good question, and interesting topic.
I am an administrator of two boards, but i'll talk about my newest one. There are many Warriors RPGs out there, people just don't notice them. Maybe even as much as Harry Potter. I have one opened, and I just opened it. I now have a little bit of understanding why people try and open up new boards after ones have already been created, well, at least some people.
I wanted to create a Warriors RPG, even though there are a few successful ones out there, and a lot of others, because of one main reason. All the Warriors RPGs i've seen in a while, or most of them, had junky layouts, stupid plots, odd rules or were just complete flops, and they were all failures. Only a few of them were successful. I believed I could make a successful RPG as well. None of my RPGs had really gotten more than 5 other members, but this one broke my losing streak, even though I still don't have many.
I believed that I could create one, and I did. Now I had many actual reasons for doing so besides that, but now i'll list all of the reasonsn that I had:
1. The same thing I said above, because sure, there were many of them, but it's not like there are many of them and they're all excellent. There are many of them, and the majority of them are junky. I wanted to create a good one. I believed I could do it, and I can.
2. I love that book series, and I honestly wanted a place of my own where I could roleplay. No unexpected twists in the plot so my character dies, unless I want to. No unexpected closings, etc. Now I understand if everyone felt this way, that there would be even more of them, but a lot of people don't think this way, which now I think is odd.
3. I also love roleplaying, and hadn't had a successful roleplaying forum in a while. I had gained popularity because of my existance on other forums, working hard to get posts and make friends. I had met a lot of Warriors fans because I had affiliated with them with my first board, and joined some places. I thought that this would be a great opportunity to start an RPG, so I did. And it was just the right time, because, at the moment, it's doing pretty well.

I became an admin for a couple reasons. One I do not care for the way members some times got treated at a couple of forums I visited. Also, I am a fan of all things scifi, fantasy and the paranormal and found it hard to keep up with all the places that I visited. I figured I would take something I was passionate about and make it a once stop kinda thing. So, now I have all of interest in one place and it doesn't consume as much time. Also, its cool to meet people with same interest.

I am the admin for a few reasons. My board theme is unique. Its probaly the first prison roleplay or at least one of the firsts, so there was no board of this type to join. I also wanted to become an admin, beacause on some sites it seems like the older members think they run the site and I dont want that to happen on my board.
