I go to the ghost in the shell website a lot and they have an on/off switch, that works wonders. I don't see it as bad, but members need to have a way to control it. I mean why would you want to listen to the same song all day? But if it's something like a hip hop forum where thousands of songs are rotated or something, that gets my interest.

Personally I think music on a forum is a bad thing if you have it set to autoplay in the BG. I think music itself is not bad if you give your members a way to turn the music off or on so they can choose to either listen or not listen. To force people to listen to music in the BG that reloads every time they change pages is not good, also after a while I am sure the members get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again and will get tired of coming to the forum if they keep having to listen to it. Overall if you give people the option to turn it off I think you would be ok with it. But again, why? I mean, surely they have other options for listening to music at their disposal... and considering copyright issues, a wider variety too. I don't personally see the point of it being optional on/off

I had a Midi version of Metallica's Wolf and Man song as my forum was about wolves. I had it embedded with no autoplay so it wouldnt slow down people just trying to use the forum but I had it available because it kind of went with my forum theme on top of being a cool song.

The only time I actually don't mind it if music is on a forum is:
1. It doesn't start automatically. 2. You can turn it on/off at any time.
If it just keeps repeating, then it gets really annoying, and people get very less attracted to the forum itself.

I often listen to music when I'm on my PC, so having music on a website/forum is really annoying. I find that it's quite noobish too, and slows down forums. If it's not on autostart, that's OK.
As for if you actually put it on the forum, yes, it should relate to the forum. But it should only be on boards like HP/Star Wars/etc boards, because on a designs forum for example it would be really pointless and unrelated.

I personally do not like forums that have music, especially the ones that have it set to autostart, or even cannot be turned of, firstly most people listen to music as they browse anyway, second. It's really horrible reset whenever you change to another page. If you you are gonna insist on having music, I say you should have a jukebox (sp?) and have it set to off on the page load.

I think that if you have music that doesn't autostart, not that many people are going to be on the page long enough to bother turning it on. I wouldn't even put it on there at all. I listen to Pandora and it kinda pisses me off when other music or sounds pop up because I usually have to turn off Pandora since I can't find the other stuff. What you could do is find some music that relates and link it in a thread (but watch the copyrights) or give a Pandora link, which is copyright free but just generates a station.

I myself hate music on a forum. I love listening to my own music that sometimes I create or I am in the mood for. I don't want to go to a site and made to listen to some Classical music over my 80's metal. Music on a site also makes the site load so much slower (I know this has been said =P), and if I was a guest and saw a site with music on it, I wouldn't hesitate to hit the X button on the browser. The newest thing I am seeing is music players that don't even have a pause or stop function. It's like...hidden or something. I feel like an old man, even though I am only 17

Music is simply annoying. Some computers are slower than others and if I'm at the city library it takes forever to download the page. Doubly annoying if you are on a lunch break and have to waste seconds waiting. I close the box immediately whenever I come across an overly fancy page with music and other stupid accessories.

I'll be honest, I don't like music on a website, unless I know it's a Music site, that I intended to visit. I don't like music on a messageboard even more. I just don't see the use in it. Yeah, it's a novelty that wears off very quickly. I am on Cable, but I have a very old pc and so things load up as slow for me as if I were on dial-up. The minute I see a thing that shows music, or hear music, I leave that site, and won't return. It's not worth taxing this old elephant anymore than I have to.

Here are my thoughts from experience. I was on a site that had music that played the whole time you were on the site. The music went with the theme of the site. At first it was cool but after a while it got on my last nerve and I just turned off my speakers. However on my site I have sound, but not songs or music that never stops. I have quick little clips of the movies, and not on every board. I also have different clips in the same board and the rotate randomly, to give members a variety. So far they seem to like that and it keeps them guessing. So in conclusion sound can be good as long as it isn't playing the whole time you’re on the site and the same tune each time. Mix it up and keep it short. Here are two examples. The first is the knight bus and it has four different sounds on it. ((this one takes a second to load so slow dial ups be warned.) cstlhwrts.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=knightbusThis one is Weasley Wizard Wheezes and it only has one sound. ((But it always makes me laugh.)) cstlhwrts.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=www

I'm against it Quite frankly, if you like the music it is okay, and of course it should always go along with the theme, as always not everyone will like it. Another thing I find annoying is when I stumble upon a web page, minding my own business, maybe reading something else on the web and then music starts blaring on my speakers 0.0 Yeah, I could turn it down, but if I'm listening to other music, it doesn't really attract me to that site or board. For one, most people won't like it, two, if you don't have the option of turning it off, it gets annoying. But I can understand people being for it, I suppose, if everyone likes the same type of music OR they have a player where you can stop/pause/etc. But "no" is just my honest opinion on the matter.
