If the forum is for a specific singer/band then yes. One of their songs should be playing. But definately, a stop button. And you should also have a selection of their songs in case someone doesn't like the song playing so have a sort of playlist. On any other forum, a big NO-NO. I close the webpage I'm on, no matter what it is when music sounds as almost every time I'm on the computer, I have music on.

I like to have Games with Sound on my Forum , i have been told it is disturbing some of the members and i really want to keep the games . i took some games out and replaced them with games that did'nt have music in the main topic areas . I hope this works out better .qc

I think that music on forum's should be gone altogether. Unless the site is for music then maybe have a music player on it. The music player does nothing for any site it's not going to get you new members. Nobody goes to a site and says "oh they have a music player i think i'll join" if you think that a music player is going to get people on your forum then you're delusional. Even if you have custom playlists as somebody stated arguments can get started up about different tastes. Also people are usually listening to music anyway so what's the point of a music player. Somebody also stated that if a unknown guest comes and disagrees with the music while the "majority" like it then they should just leave. I don't think that's good because your just turning down new members becasue they don't like the music. Also most music on sites is unrelated to the content anyway. Like any genre of music on a star wars forum. If anything maybe have the opening theme play for like 2 seconds on the main page once or something. I think that music on forum's gets annoying and doesn't attract new people. There's really no point in having it the only reason people want it is because they think it's ''cool''.
((sorry for such a long post ^^))

MusicDo you think forum admins should add music to their forum? If they do, should they make sure the music matches the forum theme (ie; not using Metallica on a Harry Potter forum)? Do you feel often members finds music annoying, or inconvenient for people with slower connections as it will take longer for the forum to completely load? What are your views on music? Debate. I find it very obnoxious when people have music added to their forum, how they manage to get the permission to host it I’ll never know. I hate it when they add it to the main page of the forum, which resets every time I click on a link or change the page. I do prefer music that is played in a pop-up since it won’t reset every time I switch topics. I think this feature should be banned by Proboards since half of the music played is stolen.

Personally? I'm against it. It can be irrituating to find a way to turn the music off, for one thing. Fr another thing, it can be an unplesant surprise when a person goes to a porboard and is greeted with a blast of sound.
Obnoxious is a good word for it... they're imposing their musical prefrences onto another. It's one thing if there's a mini-player at the bottom that one can turn on if they want music, but to just put up a sound clip is irritating.

i don't care if there's a music player on a site or don't, as long as it's not on 'autoplay'. i like to push the button if needed.
if you run a music site then it's better to have one.
but yes please... are there any possibilities to add a player on a proboards site? links?
thanx.

As a user friendly board you have to consider all who may be veiwing your site. Not all will have the ability to load the music or graphics quickly. Personally I've found you loos many people if they can't get the pages to load fast enough. We keep ours to a min on graphics and don't use any music, especially since most play their own tunes. We do have on board set u just for graphics and one for Videos so those who can view them and want to access them can, the others don't.
Again, it depends on the type of viewers you have and what members you are willing to loose because it all loads too slow.

I tend to not join sites with music because its annoying and some music i just cant stand so. I dont use music on my forums but if i ever decided to own a harry potter forum i would get a music player to make it more realistic.

I personally am against the use of the music on a ProBoards forum (or any other forum), for several reasons:
1.) Guests/members may not like listening to the music. 2.) Even if they do like the music playing, guests/members may eventually get sick of the music if they are frequent forum visitors. This is especially true if it is the same song(s) that are playing. 3.) Adding the use of music tends to increase page loading time of the ProBoard forum, due to the streaming/buffering of music files. This can irritate visiting guests/members, especially impatient ones.
Guests/members may be turned off to the forum due to these reasons.
If one still would like to have music playing on their ProBoards forum, I would suggest dedicating a section on the message board for music playing, such as "Radio," "Jukebox," etc. Guests/members then can open that section in a new window and listen to music while browsing the forums, if they choose to. This would be a win/win solution for those that want to listen to music and those that don't want to listen to music while forum browsing. ;D

I’m one of the many against music on a site. Now if there’s a certain music on a site I love I’ll listen to it, but it wouldn’t be enough to get me to view the site, I would be too, focus on the music to really pay attention to the rest of that Proboard Site. It takes longer to load (not for me personally, but I’m sure it does for others.) And after a while hearing the same songs over and over again can become boring, and quite annoying. More so if I have that song on You Tube, or on a CD somewhere, and could listen to it any time. Guests and members also shouldn’t have to be bothered to turn their volume down either.
I was on a site that had music on the site for a while. I didn’t mind it at first, but soon the song became dull, and annoying, and even the admin took it off admitting it was becoming annoying and this even had a mute button on it for those who didn’t want to hear the songs. All in all a music has no true purpose to be on a Proboard Site. It doesn’t add that much appeal I say, it has too many cons over the pros as Craig pointed out. And in a way it can drive people away. The best thing to do is to not have music on your board (period) and rely on your site content and appearance appeal to gain guests interest in your site. Music won’t help you. I know from experience.

Music? It's okay, as long as you can control it, and it doesn't start up again every time you refresh the page, or travel to another thread. What I can't STAND is when the music just starts up, with no way of stopping it unless turning off your speakers. I once belonged to a site that played the "He's A Pirate" song over and over again, until the members bugged the admin to take it off, which eventually she did. I have music on my board, right up where the header is, several songs that I and most other people enjoy listening to, members have the ability to control it, whether to pause it, or play it, and control the volume. I get my songs from radio-blog.com, which really is a great place. =D

I don't remember if I posted here yet, but here goes. I currently have a Wiccan forums and want it to be as interactive as possible without goting overboard. I had come to a decision on having music on it, yes, but I'm not forcing it onto people, so what I have done is I went to a particular website that allows you to create a playlist of up to 75 songs and as many lists as you like. This website also gives you the code for the list in HTML. So here's what I do. I create a list of something to the Wiccan effect. Let's say, Enya. I make a list of her music and get the code. I create a Music board and place the list in a sub board, no posting anywhere. I call the sub-board "Enya" and put the HTML into it. now if the member wants to listen to Enya while browsing the forums, they can click on a button on the play list and it will open up a media player on your PC. The member can then go back to the forums with or without playing the music. Plain and simple, no music is forced onto the member, it';s up to the membver if they want to hear it or not. Anyone wanting more info on this website, please feel free to PM me here and I'll be glad to point you in the right direction! ;D

My main view on this is, if people want to listen to music, then they have plenty of media options around them to do so if they please - i for example sit here listening to the radio, and my CDs, and i bet i'm not the only one... which leads me to another thing that is annoying about music on any website, is that it interupts what you are already listening too, and can, alot of the time, come as a shock when you suddenly get a loud blast of music coming out of your computer. Another con is that it isn't really suitable on a forum, simply because of the nature of a forum is that you will be clicking from page to page, and hence the music will keep restarting, which is a major annoyance... i know there are codes that will make the music come up in a seperate window, but do people really want another window open? I think this summons up it all. And that goes also for any other websites, MySpace and similar pages. I like to listen my own music, and I hate when it gets interrupted by something else (quite often much much louder), even if it is music I that like, but even worse if it is something that I dislike. If there is music on the website, it should be optional, so you can decide if you want to listen to it. It shouldn't be autoplay, I think that's wrong.
