Having never setup a forum before, I'm not sure what keywords to search for. I am setting up a forum for a homeowners association for around 100-200 members. Am I in the right place. - use my own domain name - ads are okay as long as I can setup some of my own sponsors as well - features I'd like are Private messages, admin control panel, subscribe to threads, moderator privledges, able to ban by username, email, and IP address, and control new members access. If someone can either help me out or point me in the right direction, that'd be great. Need forum hosting since I don't have servers or know how to maintain my own forum software.

Proboards has all of that set up, hosting included. It is the most beautiful message board system I've ever seen. You can probably use your own domain name, just hope that it isn't already taken. Nobody could direct you to a cleaner, more equipped message board system. It run on CGI coded with perl I believe, so it is quite reliable. Some may say a PHP board is faster, but I don't know about that. Believe me, it's all the power and then some that you'll need for your application.

You will need to purchase ad-free to do this, but still, very cheap @ 7 bucks for 50,000 page views, and you can set it so only your members page views count, therefore guests will not use them up.

I recall an admin stating that it is fine to have their own ads up as long as there is no profit being made. If they want to make profit from their own ads, then they'd have to pay for ad-free.

Of course that is true, it would depend on the nature of these sponsors, rather or not they (board owner's) were getting paid for 'hits'.

Is getting sponsors to pay for forum and hosting cost only considered making profit?

That's fine. You will be required to go through a third party company such as godaddy.com/ or cjb.net/ (free) though.

Thanks for info. I am just setting up board now. Some questions: 1> thread subscription - Is there a feature where you can subscribe to a thread and can get email notifications? 2> Guest login - If guests are able to read threads and post, why would anyone want to register? Then if you turn the setting so guests can't even access anything, then there's no bait no get more users to register. So, is there a setting where a guest can read posts, but not post? If they become interested, a guest would have to register to post.

Yes, you may require guests to login to post. You can also keep guests from viewing boards as well.

How about as the administrator, can I set bookmarks for a whole board or category at once, instead of each thread individually? How? 2> I know how to setup so guests have to register to post or even read forums. However, can I configure so that guests can read the forums but not be able to post until they register first?

Sorry, but you cannot globally bookmark threads.
You may set the boards so that guests may view, but cannot post until they register by going to your admin panel, then to "Modify Boards," and then at the bottom, set the limits to Registered Members. You'd have to do this for every board though.

Thanks Virus and Tommy. Great to have help here. I went back and changed each board to restrict to registered users. I just have to remember to set that up each time I start a new board.
As the administrator, are there any easy ways to get notified when any new post is made anywhere on forum? Or do I have to manually book mark every thread as it gets created. I know long term I won't want this, but as I am trying to get this thing off the ground, I want to baby it along.
Also, are there any directions in posts that help me understand how to change to cosmetics like adding a logo and new header image?
