I have noticed on some forums that the buttons like the "post reply" button is a simple 2d box matching the colourr scheme rather that the standard Windows' 3d button. How do I make my buttons like this?

You can get custom buttons made in the graphic requests board. Just have to provide a little info to what you want it to look like. Try here for buttons support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=graphicsrequests

To put new buttons in go to admin panel

admin--skins/forum colors--customize images-

The buttons I am talking about are not customisable with images.

That could be done with a program. The people in graphic's request board can make just about any image you want or convert images to what you wanting. Those buttons are want you going to replace the old reply button..

Sorry, I say again: these buttons are not customisable in the same way as the other buttons, like the menu buttons. If you were to view my board you would see that I have already customised almost all of the images.
I believe a code might be involved or a tweak in the settings.

Oh, that might be a bit complex, can I not just sub in some hex codes in the codes.
If not try:
text colour: #CC9933
background colour: #7E2217
border colour: #660000
