Forum URL: forrestcrow.proboards47.comHi, the forum where I'm an admin is having trouble with a troll that keeps on coming back. We ban his IP, his e-mail, and his usernames, but he will come back with other user names. What do we do? Thanks, -VH3K

That way, whenever a new member creates an account, you may approve that account for use, or not. When you are able to do such an action, you should see a "View Pending Members," under Manage Members from within your admin panel.

yes but that takes away from a site.
i think if you look around, you cna find a link somewhere for a code line that disallows Proxys, which would be the only way hes getting back in after the IP ban. Proxys = badness for forums.

Proxys = badness for forums. And how does it take away from the site? it's better than the troll being able to log on at 2am in the morning when the mods are asleep and creating havock. By having the limited registrations, the owner of a site can protect his members far better when he sees the person's ip or email or what not and can just simply deny the person's account without having to clean up the mess. The limited registrations is the best way to go. Also if you use a proxy block, you run the risk of blocking good members who's ip changes.

Wow. Okay, we don't want to go through the hassle of having having good members blocked.
I wonder if the board will go for approving registrations. But how can he not get through then? I mean, he'll use a different name, and be with a different IP address.
Also, I should say that he had three different IP addresses that he came from. All of them have the same first two numbers, two of them have same third number.

He won't be able to get through until you approve him. Under your admin you will have an option of pending members to click on the link with. There you will see where people have signed up. Until then, they will get an error message stating they cannot access the board until they are approved by the admin. Or something to that effect.
You can test it out by signing up a test account after you set it to limited registrations.

If you have an announcement explaining that limited registration is to help guarantee the quality of the members at the forum, I think that they will be willing to deal with it. You really only have 4 options. 1. Enable Limited Registration. 2. Create a "Disposable" e-mail address, and require members to e-mail you in order to recieve an account. 3. Just live with the troll. 4. Close the board forever. If given those choices, I am SURE that any members who are worth having will go for 1 or 2. (1 is less work for you)

i think if you look around, you cna find a link somewhere for a code line that disallows Proxys, which would be the only way hes getting back in after the IP ban. Proxys = badness for forums. Actually, it's called "Disconnecting from the Internet is bad for forums" That or, once again, AOL and Proboards don't mix. Why is that, you ask? Simple...First, AOL changes a user's IP address every thirty seconds within a range, and changes that range every time the person logs on. So go ahead, ban that AOL user's range...I guarantee you within a week you'll get a PM from a legit member asking why in the world they got banned for an hour or so. And anyone with dialup or DSL on a home computer can change their IP by either disconnecting or rebooting. I could go disconnect my DSL and use dialup, and you'd watch my IP change from 65.X.X.X (the usual range) to either 4.X.X.X or 122.X.X.X Only people with truly static IPs are in computer labs and office networks. Just thought that ought to be cleared up...again...
