Guest with a IP addy, but not a name?

I was just on one of my boards updating it, and i took notice to it saying "Guests 1" - and they had a ip address.. but no name? - what is this? - I know someone said it could be a google bot before, - but hes a silly question.. how do you know if the difference if it is indeed a google bot or a real person?

my board is memebers only... also if i forgot to say that earlier.

Then you answered your own question. If it's members only, then the only possibility is that it could be a Googlebot

Martyn removed the Googlebot from there. He wont show up at all anymore. Chances are, someone was just lurking on your board

That's possible I s'pose. But I'm fairly sure Martyn removed all of them because people were asking so much about it. They're still there, they just don't show up anymore is all

Hmm so what your saying now is that they were removed.. so now whenever i see a guests with some sort of IP address and no name in the "guest" section of the info center that it will actually be a person? not a google bot like everyone suggested?

Most likely someone lurking by. Unless something has changed that I don't know about. I wouldn't give it much thought though

just to clarify, google obtained many more IPs for it's bots, and I myself discovered an instance of one that wasn't yet removed by Martyn before, so it is quite possible that it was a googlebot.

Thanks - I did find it a bit odd to be a guest.. cuz my board is members only, and im sure if it was just a luker.. there isnt anyway they can get in without signing up first

Guests won't have a name. They only have a name when they are registered with the board.

oh.. okay, me being here this long you would think i know that by now! LOL its just that i seen alot of people posting the same or almost the same kind of question as me, and last i knew of when a guests shows up in the info center.. it was either just that a guest or a google bot.
Like i said before, my board is "members only" and if the guests do not register a membership on my forum they will not be able to see anything at all.. such as, boards, catagories and so on.. correct??
I also have alot of fan sites going.. well boards for them too.. and i want people to join them, (they are members only as well) - but for the fansites i want to make sure im doing everything in my power to keep the board(s) safe. - (this is in any case i suppose)
But im saying for the fan boards, - would it be best to use limited registeration on it... where i have to approve members.. or just let them sign up, and for me and my other admins to watch them?

Even if its members only people who are getting the "members ony" error will still show up in the list
