One of the members of my board tried to get the admin password and of course it was emailed back to me so he was not able to get in as an admin. I was able to look in the security log and get the ip of this member and disabled his account and banned his ip, email address and screen name. Now I get an email from this member stating that he didn't do it, that a virus took over his computer and that is what caused it to happen. Since I don't know much about viruses I thought I would ask if that was a possibility or is this member just trying to use it as an excuse to cover getting caught?

That's just a excuse to cover it up. A virus wouldn't click on forgoten password and try to get into your account.

This may be relevant.
A while ago, I joined a forum, and then was banned after a very short time. I was told that I had the exact same IP as a previously banned member. In short, they thought I was this previous user, trying to get back in under a different name. I didn't think it was possible for two pc's to have the same IP, maybe this is something to think about?

I am a nooby of the message boards but IP's I know about lol IP's change all the time so it is possible that you had the same IP as he/she once had.

It most certainly is possible. Infact, some ISP only have a few dozen and everyone uses those who use them... NTL for example.
