Just a question...
I love the PB forum my site has but I'm thinking of taking things to the next level and getting involved with phpBB - so I was wondering. Is there any way to transfer the PB database (the lot - threads, user names/profiles - everything) to a phpBB database? I'm still looking into how it all works so apologies if this is a really duh question.
If it's not possible to do everything - then is there a way to transfer anything?
Cheers, Minnn

Only way to do this is to tell your members they need to register at the new place and you'll manually edit there post counts to what they had before. Boards/threads/ posts can be copied over but that's just about all you can do. Lot of copying and pasting but no way to transfer.

Thanks guys.
I've been doing some research on it at the phpbb forums, and the other people that have posted there asking the same question (and there are LOTS) are getting "It's not possible because PB is stored as a flat-file" <-- isn't stored on a server? Is that right? Many people are saying that if it was possible to back up a board, it'd be possible to write a convertor. Do the PB head-honchos have backups of boards?
What I'm also wondering is how is it possible to backup PMs, and not a board...? *confused...and certain there must be something out there...*
Might end up just staying with PB if there's no way...my members would be scandalised/probably leave if I tried to start over!!

The PM backup you receive is just a ZIP file with a bunch of HTML files in it. It isn't a database file and couldn't be implemented into any sort of system, they're just static files. If it were possible to backup the entire board that's still all it would be -- static HTML files, not a database that you could transfer to another software. ProBoards does indeed use flat files which are like text files that are stored on the server. It's an alternative to MySQL, the database system that phpBB uses. A converter between the two would be completley impossible even if the flat files used for your board were provided to you.
But phpBB is hardly "the next level". You would be best off sticking with ProBoards. It is a more customizable and ultimately superior service.

Ahh, I see. Thanks Cali. Just looking into questions and answers now my domain's up for renewal again. Was thinking of upgrading to something with PHP/MySQL support and having a go...blah blah.
Thanks for the info guys.
