Smileys/ color Usernames issues, Please help

Im trying to add smileys to my forum. I go to the FAQ and it gives lins but they don't work, and it does not tell much. Also I was wondering how I change the color of the usernames of the people who are members on my site. Again I looked at the FAQ but it seems to be missing... or its there but Im blind and don't see it.
Anyway, can someone please help me out here?

There are some smilie codes in the code database that will allow you to add a lot of extra smilies.

I put the code where it goes and do what it tells me, but the usernames don't change the color I tell it to.

Are you sure you're using the usernames not the display names?
