Right, b-day do not change, but some people have fat fingers. It's a legal thing, right...not going to happen is it?

I think admins should at least be able to correct this.

My birthday is 1/2/1993, and occasionally I've typed it 2/1/1993, which isn't that big of a deal, but not accurate.

We've scheduled a meeting to discuss this. It wouldn't be forum side anyway. Your birthday is now part of your global login profile. We haven't built the profile page for that yet so we will be taking this request into our design meetings when we start working on it.

How does proboards plan to deal with people who put phony birthdays in their profile?

And how much involvement will a board admin have?

I would agree though that typos are wise to have correctable, especially with english vs american date formats able to trip people up.

Deal with them? In what regards? People are required at sign up to provide their real birthday in order to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. No one under 13 is allowed to be on ProBoards. When a member signs up they must agree that they are 13+ and will abide by the Terms of Service. Everyone should already have their real birthday. Falsifying it is grounds for deletion, but it isn't for you to worry about that.

Admins are not involved in any way. You are not there to police people's private information. You ask this question in a lot of your posts.

In theory you shouldn't have underage members since their birthdays have to be over 13 to register. If you have a member under 13 because of an admission by them then you still have the power to delete that member. They are a risk to your forum for having children on your forum. If you knowingly allow them to stay then that is a TOS violation. In v4 or v5 you have no control over their birthday at registration. It's no different now or later.

The request to be able to change birthdays has no bearing on this subject.

On my board, the main reason that birthdays are requested to be corrected is because someone just puts in 1/1/1900 or something like that.. Later on, they decide (for whatever reason) to have their real birthday in there. I suspect it's falsified for privacy reasons, rather than they're too young, but nonetheless, it does require work from PB to correct. I myself managed to accidentally get the wrong day in my own birthday when I created my board. <shrug>

Perhaps a user could be allowed to edit their own birthday ONCE, then after that, the option to do so disappears. They would then require assistance from staff to correct, which would also involve an explanation as to why it's needing correction again.


Shentino, it seems like you like to tattle a lot. Perhaps you should worry about your own self and let PB worry about the rest?

* editing to say that by 'the rest', I mean the smaller things like whether ads are being bypassed by means other than paying for ad-free, and such. Things like harassment, racism, etc. should always be reported, in my opinion. Though, I would go to the board admin first, and PB second (if the admin did not resolve).

Yeah ryan, my bad. Seems I was talking about a very old version of proboards before birthdays were made mandatory and the age limit was enforced. I remember a gmod on one board used to have a birthday that put his age at -100. He was noticeably irritated when he had to change it. I think the change was made back during v4 migration or so.

As far as tattling goes, I was also once advised, by PB support staff no less, to report TOS violations as a means of reducing server load. Another user made the analogy to deleting cars from a clogged freeway during rush hour.

If the months were simply changed from numbers to the month names, I can't see mismatched date formats being an issue at least.

I think out of habit we all enter the numbers - being able to select the day & month

UK format would put day first then month US format puts month first then day

So you could see the day and month was entered correctly on which format you selected
before you submited details

without getting day and months wrong

UK format is not a concern. In v4 and v5 you select the name of the month.

To update everyone though... Birthday changing has been added. It's in your profile and can only be edited by you as much as you need to fix it.
