V5 Realease?

So I know, that there hasn't been a set date for v5 release, but my question is will the Full Release be this year, or just the Transition Period?

That remains to be seen. Our dev team has been working really hard to ensure that when we launch we will have the smoothest transition possible.

We've said that we want to give forum owners around a 3 month window where they can "opt-in" to upgrade to v5, so you will have plenty of time to get any changes you want ready to go. Once this period starts, if you want v5, you'll get it. For those that wait, they will be upgraded once the transition period is over.

Yes please! I'm actually worried about updating the codes I'm currently using.

Will v4.5 codes still be compatible with v5?
Would it be possible for the forum owners to ultimately decide whether they want the update or not (even when the transition period is over)?

Some codes will be pointless because they will already be features. Some will be super easy to do with modifying the template. Some won't wont at all, but should be recreated shortly. And you do not have the option to stay on v4.5. Why would you? v5 will be like 100000000000000000000000000000 times easier and better.

With that option, your forum will just be upgraded and you won't have had the time to actually update it. So you will eventually have to sort of redo some things. The best thing I say is wait for the Beta Zone, where we admins get copies of our forums to play with. And then you can see what changes you will need to make.

I know that the admins have speculated a 2012 release quite often but with Betazone still to come first I'm not sure this is going to be the case.

I'm assuming Betazone is going to take somewhere around 3 months so unless the Open BETA is finished within 1 and a half months this is looking unlikely.

We have over 5 months before the year is over. The admin area is well over 80% done. I'd say we're currently on target for our goals.

When we're in the beta zone, I know it'll just be a copy of our forum.... But will the url be different, so my members won't see it unless they also know the url?

Well, we're only 4 years late from the original target goal (July 2008).

First, we were told via blog that ProVision would tell us a date through its newsletter. Then we were told July (in 2008) through Proboards' good old blog. But that never happened, and we got a demo video a few months later, instead. What's funny is that ProVisions closed, and v5 still isn't out. lol.

Am I the only one who remembers?

Anyways, it's great to see v5 is finally on the way. ;D

Wrighty: Is there anything that you could tell us about v5 that hasn't been publicly released yet? Say a percentage complete, release date, or even a whole new feature and a quick description?
Patrick: New feature? Auto-saving of the post or PM you are working on. If for some reason (say, browser crash) prevents you from posting, your message will be saved and automatically display when you go back to post.

I know a lot of people want me to announce a release date, but I am wary of putting one out there in case there are delays. I will say that the absolute earliest I could expect a V5 open beta would be July, but please, don't come down on me if it's not here by then or even soon after. V5 will not be released before it is complete to my standards. If it takes extra months of work, that's what it takes.
