while we are discussing this will the member who joined be able to see their own e-mail/IP address or just the e-mail ? The admin of a board can't even see their own IP or email in the forum

If they need to know their own IP they can just go to www.whatismyip.comAnd they already know their email, so there is no reason to display it

I caught several spammers in the past (that had not been reported ti stopforumspam.com) by seeing what IDs opened using my suspect email address had been posted. Thats the thing about SFS.com, it can only show the details reported. Still not convinced about not having access to members email addresses.......

Knowing your own personal information is just fine. That's why it's personal information. We aren't going to add functionality specific to users themselves. There is no where that IP Addresses display fully on v5. That makes it really easy to say we comply with any law about IPs. Compared to saying that we only show some IPs some of the time. We don't have a place for IPs to display in the layout anywhere. Adding that isn't necessary just so someone can look at their own address when it's so simple to find that out so many places else online. We have safeguards in place that prevent your from banning yourself. So you couldn't even make a mistake regarding your own IP.

Whatever Proboards would like to do, their hands are tied, with the uncertainty about the privacy law regarding IP's, Proboards are playing it safe, they don't want to get sued, and don't want to recode the software to remove the ability to see IP's, far better that they play it safe. Proboards is at least giving staff a way to control memberships and ban IP's, and be able to search for IP's without you actually seeing them

so how come we can see the info now and not at some point in the future? Also I would only want admins to see emails, in the same way any club would hold (confidentially) personal info on its members.

so how come we can see the info now and not at some point in the future? This has been answered before, several times and several places. The privacy laws have already changed in other countries, and emails especially are considered private information. Thus, users cannot be forced to let us see them, as they currently are (by staff with sufficient privileges). The US laws have not yet changed but the PB staff is acting proactively in anticipation that they will at some point.

have to say this may be a dealbreaker for me. I lost a 5 year old forum and have no way of contacting some of the members of the old forum. Now I am keeping the members emails off the forum just in case. Also in the early days I deleted hundreds of spammers before they posted as I could google thier emails before the membership was approved. I found it quicker to google emails than ips as one email/ID can have many IP addresses. Not happy about this option been taken away from me. Shame as I was just getting used to the forum........

Keeping a list (database) of your members emails without their permission may be against TOS and privacy laws. As i suggested elsewhere, if you need to worry about losing your forum, there should be no reason why you can't have a second email address that members can save as a means of contacting you. But the only way you can lose a forum is to have a serious TOS violation
A thing to note, if you decide to leave Proboards and use another provider, i would wonder how they would implement the laws, would you be able to email members from within the forum like V5 will allow ?
