after I already started on this, it was brought up in another thread that new accounts can be made for all alter-accounts and easily switched to from the icon down in the corner. would that not suffice? it would also give each character their own stats like post count and signature...

Sadly no, multiple accounts is a thing I do not like in general. Being able to alter your username and add an accompanying avatar to a specific board to me is more more efficient. n_n;;

I have a question about this. Wouldn't it be easier to merely have the options added to like.. your personal profile menu?
That way you can select the character name in a drop-down window upon posting, and select which "of x number" avatars you wish to show up?
You should be able to just set the "user names/user images" and "avatars" in your Profile>modify options. The admin should be able to regulate how many names/avatars a user can save. That way people can have "up to" that many alias' saved.
For instance, if the admin sets it to "4" then everyone can have "up to 4" alias' (with avatar images) to choose from when posting.
Just my thoughts on this when discussing it with several other site owners.

the current version Im doing just uses 1 plugin key, to store which alter was used to make that post. the admin will have to enter the character data for each alter.
if you made it where members create their own alter, then the plugin would go up to 2 keys, including a super-user key.

Ah. What about anyone using the plugins to change usernames to images? I noticed that we are basically telling the plugin, "hey, this user (name1)is still name1 but now also using alias1 to overwrite their default name."
Then if you end up with a code where it is saying name1 = image... it would technically conflict with it overwriting it with an alias; wouldn't it? Since the image would be replacing their name no matter what alias they were using.
This is what we were discussing over on our site the past few days, trying to figure out the best way of going about that problem. We had nothing better to do since we were waiting on some other information.

if the link that the display name was changed was still intact, it would still find it because it uses the href for it. unless whatever plugin you used is completely destructive

Ok, so if the person signed up with the account "name1", then changed their username to "Bob" I know that their account name stays "name1". Then say the site owner decides to change everyone's usernames to funny text images, and "Bob" ends up "::Bob::" with a little graphic.
When using the alias script where "::Bob::" (Bob) wants to now post as "Joe" does the previous script go "hey this is still "name1" so the image graphic stays "::Bob::" or does it show up as "Joe" when he wants to post as his alias?
I believe that is what a more thorough question should have been.
We were looking at your code ages ago and noticed that it does require the person's account id ("name1" in the example) for you to write an "alias" for them, but how would you go about making "Joe" into "::Joe::"?
With the current image code, you can only designate one image for the person's "account name", so no matter what "name1" is always going to show up as "::Bob::" because you deemed it so in the other plugin, while this particular one is trying to have "Bob" show up as "Joe" now.
So either "Joe" would be unstyled, or what happens? We just upload an image for "::Joe::" and it magically works? None of us seen a part in the current code you had where you were able to designate a url for an image to replace the alias name.
That is what myself and the others were trying to figure out.
Since we didn't know if we had to somehow customize the end product or if we would be having to stick in more brutal injections.
I wonder if the coders think I am a pain in their posterior because of asking these questions~
I just like it when codes sort of think outside the box to solve conflicting before they happen; and we were crossing our fingers hoping that this wouldn't cause one with the whole "username to image" plugins everyone uses. So we wanted to try and take a pre-emptive stab at it. We cannot even work on our own forums anyway since there is a huge database error for the v5 beta sites.
<T^T>
Thanks so far for answering.
(YAY COLOURS!)
