Hi  Just curious really, I was doing a screen shot for my site's age to show off to my friend in my group that reads my stories, my ONE friend LOL but anyway, noticed that there were 44 guests. Have you any idea why it would be guest heavy when I am the only member on my site and have all accounts and don't advertise my site at all, as I'm the sole writer on there?! Thanks.  |

If your forum is open, bots like google, yahoo, bing, etc, are probably crawling it for indexing. Basically, anyone who is currently on your site, even just at a login page, will show as a guest.

I don't have any members. I am the only member on the site switching accounts - I find it kind of freaky to see that I have so many guests when I know I shouldn't have them. Is there a way to turn that off? Because I have paid for proboards plus that means I am ad-free.

I don't believe it's possible to turn that off, but a staff member could say for sure.. Ad free would have nothing to do with guests on your forum, however. Even if you closed your board to guest viewing, you'd still have guests- even though they wouldn't see anything past the login page.

I need to have my forum open or my friend in my Facebook group wouldn't be able to read my stories. I just find it very freaky to get so many guests for no reason. I mean what are those bots looking for anyway? LOL It's not like they can post something is it? I'd hate for it to make my site available in a google search or some such nonsense.  |

No, the bots can't post. But I can tell you from having tried it just now, you do come up in google searches. However, I have no idea how you could have any of those results removed now that they're out there.

I had no idea that that happened. I just googled and got the same stuff, down to board activity charts. Ugh, I don't like that AT ALL!!!! I never used to get that many guests when I was on V4. My friend also likes to read my profiles or I'd have certain sections closed off to guests. That said I do not allow for guests to post, so I suppose that's one thing. That freaks me out for some reason. LOL!

Meh. It doesn't bother me. My board is all over google searches. But, then again, I want it to be because it took up where MSN left off when it started closing message boards down.

If it was a general chat site, I'd not be fussed. But it's my personal creative writing site, I don't exactly want it out there for the world to see. I just thought that whoever got the link to my site could access it. Oh well, I guess if there's nothing I can do about it then fair enough. But I find it very weird and just a little intrusive...  |

Mands you might find this thread interesting? Ahh I remember that.. I am using a different script now.. It seems to have cut my page views by about 50%. Put this in your Global Header at the very top and also in Themes/ Layout Templates/ Forum wrapper between the <head> tags which are at the top. <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow, noarchive, nosnippet, noodp">And who knows.. It might just be that the googlebots have just slowed down indexing me..giving me a placebo affect.. It took about 2 months for a difference.. |

I actually remember that thread now that I glanced through it, seemed a lot of people were finding it annoying but that was because they were paying for ad-free and the bots were taking away their page views which comes down to ad-free. I haven't specifically paid for ad-free in that respect, I have purchased the proboards plus which gives me ad-free. I'm not bothered about pageviews but I am bothered about people being able to find me in google/bing searches as I don't want every man and his dog reading my work. I guess it would be more problematic if I had allowed guests to post on my site, but thankfully I don't. So I figure if anybody does see it and think my stories are crap they have no way of being able to tell me.

People in our community know how to find us.. We don't need rankings. Plus we're cheap lol..We like to keep the ad free at $8.00 a month.. |
