The code I provided is not for V5 since the board is not V5. It's best for guests not to see member's personal information in their profiles BH. And I fully agree with you and I'm very glad you pointed that out, about my board, my dear. {{{Hugs}}}

I have to question why the worry about people seeing profiles - then again I run a RP - also if it's a V5 site I don't think that code will work. Anyway a new thing I'm finding quite effective is plug-boards. Pretty much these exist on the internet to plug your sites button and url in. How or where do I get a button for my forum?

There are a lot of things you can do I advertise my site on here and then I make sure I do my link back every week... Also a lot of it is when members talk to people they know from other sites. I had a role play site and the main way I got members was from word of mouth when my members told there friends on other sites and then they would join, but that lead to a problem where everyone had there own little groups and wouldn't plot with other members so the site dad after 7 months which was really sad. My main thing to you would be go to on an advertising spree I made sure to advertise as much as possible if I wasn't working on the site or talking to guest I always had links up advertising and talking on other peoples forums. Crystal said it too don't tell people to click your name just talk be nice and I'm positive they will click it... ALSO I cant say this enough if a guest comes to your site and its talking in you " Cbox/Shout box/chatandgo" always be nice and talk to them as much as needed because if there like me I will talk to site members for a whole day before I even think about join and then other guest will see that and want to join.. If there is anything else that can help feel free to ask we all like to help each other around here.

A few. Allot of them were bots though. Google bots get on my nerves sometimes. I know I am replying to a rather old post, but hopefully you respond. Why do bots generate views? Why would someone take the time to even do that? I just randomly got a ton of guests today (a bit over 100) which isn't usual for my forum. So, do you know why someone would take the time to give another forum a ton of views? I honestly don't understand it.

Are all the IP addresses different and are they via proxy server?

They were all different IP addresses. I'm not sure if maybe they just came from the advertizing forum, but I don't think the chances of that are very high. Since then I haven't gotten that many, although it was only a couple of days ago.

Surprisingly I got more traffic whenever members 'had to register in order to see the forums'. But that's not the only thing that helped. Most of it was advertising on forums and making trailers on youtube. Just spreading the word.

Word of mouth. Finding a main website to be connected to helps matters a great deal as well which is probably where most of our success came from.
11,231 members.
429,570 threads.
10,377,877 posts.
Never once advertised anywhere.
*shrugs* sometimes you just get lucky.

To stay up to date and have accurate information, they send out robot accounts to monitor hundreds of sites a day. This is what keeps search engines running, because if they don't have accurate information people begin to stop using them and start using one of their competitors, which makes their stocks tank and thus destroys the company.

I too would like to know how to promote our forum site, since we have never done it before. I had a question. We are about 9 months old now, and are getting between 500-700 guests a day with no advertising. But what I want to know is, what percentage of these guests are bots for google or spambots? How can I figure out how many of the 500-700 guests we are getting everyday are real people, not bots? Thanks.

Don't know it will have all the bots, but it should give you plenty to chew on.

Like lately, we get between 500-700 guests a day, but sometimes I think that almost 1/2 are google type bots or maybe spam or advertising bots. It is hard to figure out how many actual human guests that we get. Guess there is no real way to find out, just interesting to see how many bots we get to our site, never realized bot activity was so much.
