profile comments

You see how on your profile you can update status. I was curious if it's possible via by plugin or something that allows us other members to comment on your profile kinda like facebook has and other forum hosts.

like saving each status and all the comments on it? it wont be forever though. there would be a limit.

Like Facebook has you post on someone profile and then they can comment back.

I think not Facebook, but more like what other hosts have (not sure specifically which ones, vB and IPB maybe?). Maybe it could show only the last 10-20 comments made on the profile? Or maybe a bit more..

I had assumed that originally, but the reply post made it seem like they were after what facebook does in a plugin.

there is 4K worth of storage in a plugin key. lets say, for estimation, that every status was 100 characters. th eplugin, without storing any comments, can save 40 statuses - approx. now lets say each comment was 50 characters. throw an estimated 10 comments on each status. that is 100 chars for the status, plus 10*50=500 for the comments. 600 characters. now you are storing 6 statuses+comments before key data is full.

so that is what I was meaning by "limited". its not going to be like what facebook can do. if you are at 3990 characters in storage. and someone posts an 11 character comment, it has to kick out something to make the room. the top of the heap is going to be the oldest stored status. if you kick a status, all the comments go with it.

now forgiving all the mechanics on that, there is still a major flaw in that plan:

you make a 100 character status.
39 people make 100 character comments.

game over.

you cant kick out anything now because there is only 1 status stored. if you kick that out to make room for the next comment, the next comment wont have a status to be relative to. and even if you cheated and used the "current status" field as the place to display current status.. what do you do when its all comments? start removing the oldest comments?

It was discussed before, but it fizzled. the other thread was looking to do comments on each status update like facebook, but I had to point out some potential flaws in the idea.

if you are looking to just let people leave about 50 characters each then that can likely be done

this idea might go better if it doesnt save the statuses at all. it just works off the current status. all the comments can be put under that spot. when the status gets changed, it clears the comments out.

I dont know what they have. do they keep statuses and comments indefinitely?
