Just a short comment that may or may not be relevant:

For some years now (while we basically only used the Heretix theme), the MPBG didn't function for all members, so in order to help them, I told them to insert the following i into the subject text field:

{"image":"INSERT BACKGROUND IMAGE URL HERE"}

Scott helped me to get my MPBG fix... of course he directed me in the right direction! wooo hooo!
