Staff can leave a reason when the user goes on the page that tells then they are banned or their account(s) were disabled.
I don't think there are templates or plugins of which can do this.

Hi @seewon,
In general, if a staff member wished to impose discipline so far as to prevent a member access to the forum, it's assumed that they've either A.) made use of the warning system and let the member know of their infringement of the rules that way, or B.) simply want them off the forum as quickly as possible. With that in mind, there's not really a need for adding in the ability to specify a ban reason.
I can mark this thread with the feature request label for our dev's reference if you want, though.

I've slapped the label on there, so our devs can check this thread out later when they're looking for ideas from the community.

Yeah, I'd also like to see the ability for admins and mods to edit ban messages explaining to someone why they were banned, or how long their ban will last if it's temporary.
I hope proboards will consider adding this.

If you make the ban temporary, I believe it tells the member how long the ban is for when they try to log in.

Yes,but I was thinking of like a "Moderator Note" for the user to see apon logging in. A message that a staff member can leave for the ban member to see.

I get what you're saying. But as David said, there should be very few instances where someone can't figure out all on their own why they were banned. If they know the rules of the forum and disregard them, as well as ignore warnings, then they deserve to be banned and I don't feel providing a reason should be necessary. And, if they really can't figure it out, then my email address is plainly posted. They can contact me that way.

At any rate, this thread has been marked for our developers to take a look at when they're adding features in down the line!

I don't think they are told the duration of their ban if banned temporarily. I had one member that was banned 24 hours but it just said "You have been banned from this forum". He assumed it was permanent and didn't come back until I told him via email months later that his ban had been lifted.

I can confirm the ban message only shows "You have been banned from this forum." If you disable an account, however, it will show the duration of that on the Account Select screen when logging in.

Yeah, I thought so. Thanks for confirming. I'm holding out hope that ban messages will one day become editable.

"....there should be very few instances where someone can't figure out all on their own why they were banned..." like a guessing game, right? nah I don't buy that

If you're going to ban someone, you could always email them with the reason for the ban if you actually believe they don't know why they're being banned.
