can't read it since privacy issue MyBB has a forum plugin that allows admins to read pms I think. It happened over at conceptart.org Anyway I think privacy of PMs is a good feature, I just wanted to make sure before I announce it to users.

Absolutely not. It is a privacy issue... I can't even believe there is such a plug-in? Very surprising.

Yeah here's an example of a myBB one. mods.mybb.com/view/private-message-logAt least that one tells users their pms are being read. The users of conceptart.org only found out because the mods were mentally unstable and would read pms to see if anyone was badmouthing them and then ban those users. It's actually illegal to read private correspondence in some places (though NSA doesn't care ...)

That depends on what is in the message They say they can't see them but attachments are not allowed in PM's because it is some kind of violation of privacy, So evidently they are not truly Private

Admins cannot read any PM conversation they are not part of. There is no plugin that would allow this, either.
Edit: As far as attachments go, I can surmise they're not available via PM because they use the overall attachment space for the forum, and as admins aren't capable of reading PMs they're not a part of, they can't remove attachments if the space is needed. That is conjecture on my part though!

Posting to confirm what's been said throughout this thread.
PMs work the same as email. They cannot be read by a user that did not author them or receive them (whether that be directly or through the Forward feature). There's also no indication that the user on the other end has read the message or not.
We have no plans to change either of those facts as doing so would remove the privacy factor of private messages.

@jenn823, I've seen it, and even seen one for SMF forums made. Of course, SMF refused to allow it to be posted at their site, but it is out there. Someone said there's one for phpBB, too, but that's not confirmed.

Michael, I have not used the PM system much yet on PB, but is there a way for members to report PM's? If so, that would be the only way for someone other than the parties to read them, and it would not be a violation, as one of the parties has sent it as a report.

You can forward the conversation to a staff member on the forum via the Actions dropdown when viewing the conversation.
